An authoritative text supporting the newcomer to karate with all they need to know up to black belt level. Packed with clear photographs detailing techniques & kata (the combinations of techniques students need to master to progress through the belts) this book will be clearly laid out & designed to take the student step by step through the progression of the martial art taking each belt in turn. Photographs will be accompanied by clear instructions from the author a trained instructor with his own karate school. Karate is a martial art that focuses on the application of strikes using predominantly the hands & feet. It originated in Japan & has become popular throughout the world. There are many styles of karate but the most widely practised outside of Japan is Shotokan Karate. Training in karate is normally divided into three sections: the basic technique; kata or sequencing of techniques to imaginary opponents; & kumite the sparring done with an opponent. Gradings are the exams needed to be passed to progress on to the next level. Around three months is needed to progress through each grading. There are typically three or four gradings per year each with a syllabus. In total there are 10 gradings to be passed in order to get a black belt
- this on average takes a student 4 years to attain. This book would cover all the training needed to attain a black belt.

Following the success of his first book The Shotokan Karate Handbook -- Beginner to Black Belt the author felt there was a need for a manual to assist the more experienced student. Therefore he has concentrated on more advanced techniques such as Kihon lppon Kumite Jiyu lppon Kumite sets 6 & 7 & all the remaining Katas in Shotokan Karate. However every now & then a publication appears on the bookstands that can do just that. One such book is this one. The following pages contain a wealth of information on the Kihon Kata & Kumite aspects of Traditional Shotokan. A handsomely illustrated photographic account by the bestselling author of ' Tommy' of the human experience of war as directly witnessed by British soldiers in the First World War. Richard Holmes one of Britain's best-known military historians (and President of the British Commission of Military History) has selected over 200 photographs taken for the most part by officers & men rather than by official photographers -- mostly unfamiliar ones located in archive collections regimental museums & private sources. The book will deal with the whole of the British Army's experience of the First World War -- Gallipoli Mesopotamia & so on -- & not just on the Western Front. The photographs will be grouped thematically as extended picture essays; topics include the pre-war army & mobilisation of 1914; the contribution made by nurses; medical treatment & the wounded; infantrymen & their weapons; the campaign in Mesopotamia & more. Like ' Tommy' the book is about people rather than things about the human experience of war rather than its strategy or tactics & at least as much about the everyday or commonplace -- a latrine here or a plate of bully beef there -- as about the lofty or portentous. It shows us the dirt beneath the fingernails of history. ...

' Now the seas were more awesome in their raging insanity. Each mountain of glassy grey rose high above the raft shielding it for a few seconds from the whip of the wind its crest blowing off like the plume of an Etruscan helmet before it slid down collapsing upon itself in the tumbling roar of breaking water.' In German East Africa on the eve of the First World War two freebooting adventurers
- one a flamboyant Irish American the other an impeccable young Englishman
- pit their wits against the gross German Commissioner from whose territory they are making their living as game hunters & ivory poachers. But the outbreak of war gives the signal for their private skirmishing to flare into a relentless vendetta pursued with devastating violence by land & sea so that what begins as a comic escapade gives way to chilling horror.. .
