This 2008 book is an extensively-annotated edition of Macbeth offering a thorough reconsideration of one of Shakespeare's most popular plays. A full & accessible updated introduction studies the immediate theatrical & political contexts of Macbeth's composition especially the Gunpowder Plot & the contemporary account of an early performance at the Globe. It treats such issues as whether the Witches compel Macbeth to murder; whether Lady Macbeth is herself in some sense a witch; whether Banquo is Macbeth's accomplice in crime; & what criticism is levelled against Macduff. Several possible new sources are suggested & the presence of Thomas Middleton's writing in the play is proposed. An extensive well-illustrated account of the play in performance examines several cinematic versions such as those by Kurosawa & Roman Polanski & a brand new introductory section on recent performances & adaptations brings the edition completely up-to-date. ...

- it's all here! Featuring stunning artwork & full of action atmosphere & intrigue from start to finish; this new treatment of The Bard's wonderful tragedy will have you on the edge of your seat. It's 11th century Scotl&. Macbeth Thane of Glamis is one of King Duncan's greatest war captains. Upon returning from a battle with the rebellious Thane of Cawdor Macbeth & Banquo encounter three witches who prophecy that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor & then King. They also prophecy that Banquo will become the father of kings. When Lady Macbeth hears this she is determined to push her husband to take fate into his own hands & make himself king by murdering Duncan. Macbeth is reluctant to harm Duncan. But when the King makes arrangements to visit Macbeth's castle the opportunity presents itself. Pressed on by his wife Macbeth kills Duncan & blames the King's drunken attendants who he also kills. However Macbeth is racked with guilt & begins to see apparitions. When the body is discovered Malcolm & Donalbain the King's sons are suspicious of Macbeth & flee for their lives. To everyone else it looks as if the sons have been the chief conspirators & Macbeth is crowned King of Scotl&. Banquo's suspicions grow based on his encounter with the witches & Macbeth is wary of the second prophecy concerning Banquoa's offspring. Macbeth hires assassins to kill Banquo & his son Fleance. Banquo is murdered that night but Fleance escapes. The bloody ghost of Banquo appears to Macbeth at a feast tormenting his already guilty conscience. In addition Macduff once a comrade of Macbeth has fled after the King's sons to England as he also suspects Macbeth. In revenge Macbeth butchers Macduff's entire household. Macduff & the King's sons raise an army in England & march against Macbeth who is given another prophecy by the witches as he prepares for the assault. They tell him his throne is safe until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane & he will not die by the hand of any man born of a woman. Macbeth now feels invincible. Lady Macbeth on the other hand has been slowly driven mad by her dreams in the wake of Duncan's murder. She sleepwalks & eventually kills herself. Macbeth learns that many of his lords are deserting & joining Malcolm's army which approaches Dunsinane under cover of boughs which they've cut from the trees of Birnam Wood. Macbeth & Macduff eventually meet on the bloody battlefield. Macbeth laughs derisively relating the witches' prophecy. But Macduff retorts that he was from his mother's womb untimely ripp'd & not (technically) of woman born. The play ends with the death of Macbeth & Malcolm is crowned King of Scotl&."

It is Cheshires furthest outpost before taking the road into Derbyshire & many years ago entered the Industrial Revolution in a more genteel manner perhaps by becoming a silk town. Here all manner of silk items were manufactured such as the narrowest ribbons & the best of silks & satins. It is the perfect place to explore Macclesfield Forest & the Cheshire Peak District but the town itself has plenty to offer including the Heritage Centre with its museums & tea room. The death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC threw the Macedonians into confusion; there was no capable heir & no clear successor among the senior figures in Alexanders circle. Initial attempts to preserve the unity of Alexanders conquests gave way to a period of bloody & prolonged warfare. For well over a century the largely mercenary armies of Alexanders successors imposed their influence over the whole of the Near East while absorbing local military practices. After Romes decisive defeat of Carthage in 202 BC Macedonia came under increasing pressure from the Romans. Three wars between the two powers culminated in the Roman victory at Pydna in 168 BC which laid Alexanders empire to rest & established Roman hegemony in the Near East. Drawing upon a wide array of archaeological & written sources & written by a noted authority on the Hellenistic period this survey of the organization battle history & appearance of the armies of Alexanders successors is lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned full-colour artwork. ...
