Disaster was not inevitable but the team were aiming for an eighth speed record to add to their earlier successes. The book details the minutiae of the events as they occurred & illustrates how frustrations regarding the attempt built up over time to the extent that Campbell went from being optimistic that the record would be achieved within a matter of days to the point where he become more & more beleaguered as the weeks rolled on & finally where he seemed to be about to pull victory from the jaws of defeat only for circumstances to intervene which resulted in his death. ...

Generations are familiar with the haunting black & white television footage of Donald Campbell somersaulting to his death in his famous Bluebird boat on Coniston Water in January 1967. It has become an iconic image of the decade. His towering achievements & the drama of his passing are thus part of the national psyche. But what of the man himself? The son of the legendary Sir Malcolm Campbell who was famous for being the ultimate record-breaker of the inter-war years
- he broke the land speed record nine times & the water speed record four times with his Bluebird cars & boats
- Donald Campbell was born to speed. He was outgoing & flamboyant yet carefully orchestrated the image he presented to the world. Some saw him as a playboy adventurer; others such as the radio producer on the twenty-first anniversary of his death as a reckless daredevil with a death wish. He was known to take solace in extra-marital dalliances & was obsessed with spiritualism. & in his final years battered by a 360-mph accident while attempting the land record on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah & his prolonged & anti-climactic subsequent effort on the treacherous Lake Eyre in Australia Campbell appeared a haggard & often frightened man. He had become trapped on his record-breaker's treadmill as he continually sought to prove himself to his illustrious father in whose long shadow he felt forever trapped. DONALD CAMPBELL: THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK paints a fascinating portrait of an intense complex superstitious yet abnormally brave man who was driven not only by the desire to prove that he was worthy of the mantle of his father but also by his fervent & unswerving desire to keep Britain at the forefront of international speed endeavour. This book generates a unique insight into how his desperate fear of failure finally lured him into taking one risk too many.

Eager to prove or disprove many myths that had circulated over the years about Doncaster pubs renowned South Yorkshire writer Peter Tuffrey embarked on an intensive research programme in the mid-1980s to gain a erudite view of the subject. Along the way he has gathered a mountain of invaluable information from a variety of reference sources including newspapers architectural plans & licensing registers which have helped provide a solid foundation for this book. It should also be mentioned that many people have helped Peter with his research including the late Doncaster historian James Edward Day Doncaster Civic Trust Secretary; Eric Braim LVA President; Terry Oates Doncaster Trades & Labour Club President; Geoff Elvin & many more. The illustrations range from unique sketches of pubs existing before the advent of photography to pictures Peter took in the late 1990s with the help of former Doncaster Evening Post photographer Geoff Harrison. These show landlords & landladies posing outside their pubs with an army of regulars. Amazingly some of these pubs have since closed been demolished or renamed making the record even more significant. But looking back Doncasters pub scene has been one of constant change & sadly in the present economic climate its decline seems likely to continue in the years ahead. The book will be full to the brim with information for local pub buffs & historians alike. So raise your glasses & toast Peter Tuffreys new book Doncaster Pubs. ...
