When Jeremy Hardy decided to explore his ancestry it was in part to get to the bottom of his grandmother Rebecca's dubious claims that the family descended from a certain 17th-century architect & that more recently Jeremy's great-grandfather was a Royal bodyguard. Other legends ranged from the great aunt who ran illegal hooch during Prohibition to the wronged Victorian servant girl who bore an illegitimate Hardy not forgetting the family's rightful claim to a large country estate. Wild stories aside Jeremy sets out to such diverse locations as the Croydon one-way system & the hostile waters around Malta in order to find traces of recognisable family traits & a sense of how he came to be. With wry humour & a keen eye for the absurd & the frustrating Jeremy takes us on a by turns funny & moving journey into the world of family ancestry. My Family & Other Strangers" will be enjoyed by anyone who has tried to decipher the 1901 census records or simply wishes they too had asked their grandparents more about their lives." ...

Stewart Imlach was an ordinary neighbourhood soccer star of his time. A brilliant winger who thrilled the crowd on Saturdays then worked alongside them in the off-season; who represented Scotland in the 1958 World Cup & never received a cap for his efforts; who was Man of the Match for Nottingham Forest in the 1959 FA Cup Final & was rewarded with the standard offer
- GBP20 a week take it or leave it. Gary Imlach grew up a privileged insider at Goodison Park when Stewart moved into coaching. He knew the highlights of his fathers career by heart. But when his dad died he realised they were all he knew. He began to realise too that hed lost the passion for football that his father had passed down to him. In this book he faces his growing alienation from the game he was born into as he revisits key periods in his fathers career to build up a picture of his football life
- & through him a whole era. My Father & Other Working-Class Heroes" brilliantly recaptures a lost world & the way it changed blending the personal & the historical into a unique soccer story."

An unknown place. This was what Michael Frayns children called the shadowy landscape of the past from which their family had emerged. In this book he sets out to rediscover that lost land before all trace of it finally disappears beyond recall. As he tries to see it through the eyes his parents & the others who shaped his life he comes to realise how little he ever knew or understood about them. This is above all the story of his father the quick-witted boy from a poor & struggling family who overcame so many disadvantages & shouldered so many burdens to make a go of his life; who found happiness had it snatched away from him in a single instant & in the end after many difficulties perhaps found it again. Father & son were in some odd ways ridiculously alike in others ridiculously different; & the journey back down the corridors of time is sometimes comic sometimes painful as Michael Frayn comes to see how much he has inherited from his father
- & makes one or two surprising discoveries about both of them along the way.. .
