' Well now prove it Sheila. As John would say Put your money where your mouth is." Be a depressed widow boring the arse off everyone or get on with life. Your choice.' In The Two of Us Sheila relived her life with John Thaw
- years packed with love & family delight & despair. & then she looked ahead. What next? Gardening grannying & grumbling while they all had their pleasures weren't going to fill the aching void that John had left. ' Live adventurously' a Quaker advice was hovering around her brain. Putting her & John's much loved house in France on the market she embarked on a series of journeys. She tried holidaying alone contending with invisibility & budget flights. She tried travelling in a group but the questions she wanted to ask were never the ones the guide wanted to answer. She tried relaxing
- harder than you might think. Finally heading out of her comfort zone she found her travels & the things she discovered led her back to her past; to consider her generation
- the last to experience the Second World War
- & the kind of person it made her. Just Me is a book about moving on but it is also about looking back & looking anew. Sheila whether facing down burglars & Easyjet staff or making friends with waiters & taxi drivers whether unearthing secrets in Budapest getting arrested in Thailand exulting in the art of Venice or searching for a decent cup of coffee in Dorset is never less than stimulating company. Honest
- because if you can't say what you think at seventy-three when can you?
- insightful & wonderfully down to earth she is a woman seizing the future with wit gusto & curiosity on her own."

This is a non-fiction Christmas bestseller. Just My Type" is not just a font book but a book of stories. It is: about how Helvetica & Comic Sans took over the world; about why Barack Obama opted for Gotham while Amy Winehouse found her soul in 30s Art Deco; about the great originators of type from Baskerville to Zapf or people like Neville Brody who threw out the rulebook or Margaret Calvert who invented the motorway signs that are used from Watford Gap to Abu Dhabi; about the pivotal moment when fonts left the world of Letraset & were loaded onto computers...and typefaces became something we realised we all have an opinion about. As the " Sunday Times" review put it the book is "a kind of Eats Shoots & Leaves for letters revealing the extent to which fonts are not only shaped by but also define the world in which we live"." ...

From the sublime to the ridiculous Just My Typo is a hilarious collection of typographical errors slips of the pen & embarrassing misprints which like any typo of any kind should never have happened cannot be excused & must not in any way be glorified. Enjoy. Youll travel back in time to meet great figures from history: Sir Francis Drake (who circumcised the world in a small ship) Queen Victoria (who pissed graciously over the Menai Bridge) & Rambo (the famous French poet). Youll find moral instruction (Blessed are the meek for they shall irrigate the earth) & pearls of wisdom (love is just a passing fanny). Youll be outraged by politicians who exploit disasters to boost their pubic profiles; entranced by lambs that gamble in the fields; concerned for a man who was admitted to hospital suffering from severe buns; & appalled to meet 11-year-old twins Helen & Ugh. ...

Peter Falk came to prominence as an actor in 1956 in the highly successful off-Broadway revival of The Iceman Cometh" with Jason Robards. Although he worked continuously for the next three years bouncing from one off-Broadway theatre to the next a theatrical agent advised him not to expect much work in motion pictures because of his glass eye. Later a talent scout for Columbia Pictures described Falk as a second John Garfield but Harry Cohn the head of Columbia Pictures unfortunately disagreed: ' For the same price I can get an actor with two eyes'. But in 1958 Twentieth Century Fox came to New York to make a movie
- " Murder Inc"
- & Falk landed a juicy role for which he received rave reviews & incredibly was nominated for an Academy Award. He was then nominated again for his second film " Pocketful of Miracles" starring Bette Davis. Falk went on to become a favourite among filmgoers yet it was through television that he reached his widest audience as Lt. Columbo winning four Emmys for the role. Interestingly " Columbo's" raincoat came out of Falk's bedroom closet. He bought it years before he became an actor. He's been"ed as saying 'I wanted to wear something people would remember. Bottom line it's the world's most famous raincoat'. " Just One More Thing" is pure Peter Falk & reads as if he's sitting next to you chuckling as he recalls his remarkable past."
