The LNER is famously associated with their streamlined Gresley A4 Pacific locomotives & that most celebrated of locomotives Flying Scotsman. The new build Pacific Tornado has raised the profile of the 4-6-2 type to even greater heights. The LMS produced powerful Pacific locomotives to a Stanier design; whilst the Southern Railway constructed Bullied air smoothed 4-6-2 engines. The GWR who built Britain's first Pacific type actually entered the BR era without a 4-6-2 type on their stock list! However Riddles included 4-6-2 engines in his multi regional BR Standard range. Following the success of the first two rebuilt Claughton class engines the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) in 1932 embarked upon a building programme of fifty more Patriot class 5XP locomotives. The new 4-6-0 locomotives were at first referred to as Baby Scots until officially named the Patriot class in 1937. Two batches of the new 3 cylinder engines were built simultaneously forty at Crewe & ten at Derby. In 1948 British Railways took all fifty-two Patriot class engines into stock & subsequently eighteen of the class were rebuilt as 7P locomotives. Although successful in traffic & popular with engine crews & enthusiasts alike no example of these trains survived into preservation.
