Newells Old Boys Away 05/06

Club Atlético Newell's
Old Boys is the famous
football team from
Rosario, Argentina,
founded in 1903. It was
named by ex-pupils of the
English High School of
Rosario, in homage to
its director and football
coach—English immigrant
Isaac Newell. Newell's
Old Boys has an historic
rivalry with Rosario
Central, the other club
from Rosario. Newell's
Old have enjoyed a long
and illustrious history
of winning, both local
and International. The
Boys have won the
Argentine Championship
five times (Metropolitano
1974, 1987/88, 1990/91,
Clausura 1992 and
Apertura 2004). The
1990/91 Championship was
disputed between the 1990
Apertura (Newell's) and
1991 Clausura (Boca
Juniors) Champions. Even
though the 1990 Clausura
was not considered
official by itself, it
is considered by Newell's
supporters to be their
"sixth"
championship. In the
maximum Latin American
Club Soccer Tournament
– the Liberators of the
Americas Cup, Newell’s
was the Sub-Champion
twice, in 1988 and 1992.
Newell's also won a
mini-tournament called
Little World Cup in 1988,
against giants like
River Plate, Milan,
Juventus, Real Madrid
and Manchester United.
Newell’s is one of the
few argentine clubs that
made a long and
successful tour of Europe
(in 1941), where they
defeated several
important teams, like
Valencia, Borussia,
Real Madrid and the
Spanish National
"A" Team.
Newell's Old Boys is the
argentine club that has
won the most times the
Rosario League (42), the
Reserva tournaments (16),
the Inferiores Young
National Tournaments
(78), the Latinoamerican
U-17 Championships (5)
and the Youth World Cups
F.I.F.A. aka Nike Cup
(1). The club has also
contributed to the
Argentina national
team’s success with an
important number of
players, and has
exported many players to
Europe's top leagues,
mostly to Italy and
Spain. Among its great
players: Gabriel
Batistuta, Balbo, Jorge
Valdano, Gallego,
Zanabria, Dezotti,
Sensini, Samuel,
Pochettino, Pontoni,
Martino, Perucca and
several more.

Almargo Home 2005

On January 6, 1911, a
group of youths, by way
of a fusion between three
teams—LÉZICA, SAN
MARTÍN JUNIORS and
JUBILE—dissolved for
different causes, formed
the Almagro Football
Club, named in homage to
the populous Buenos Aires
neighborhood. In 1937
they won the First
Division championship.
The following year they
earned important
victories against local
opponents Boca Juniors
and Velez Sarsfield.
During the 1951
championship, Almagro
won 6 straight games and
outscored opponents 27 to
13, yet fell 3 points
short of eventual
champion, Rosario
Central. Ahead to 1971,
Almagro won the Category
C championship. 1977 saw
the game between Almagro
and Talleres, which
would determine the
fourth team to descend to
a lower category: they
won 3 to 1 and gained a
foothold on the First B
category. In 1986,
during their 7th
anniversary, the club
once more reached the
First B, defeating
Cordoba 3 to 1. One of
the most beloved teams of
Argentina, Almagro has
reached the First A
Division three times,
including the 2004
