Leucothoe Scarletta likes a shady spot where it makes an attractive feature with its striking leaves which are dark maroon when young, turn green as they mature & become bronze in the autumn. This hardy evergreen definitely prefers partial or even deep shade, but when it is grown in full sun, the leaves take on an almost metallic sheen. Leucothoe also works well as part of an evergreen tapestry, especially combined with golden foliage plants like Euonymus. It looks exotic but is easy to grow in acid soil. In gardens without acid soil it can be grown in a large container using ericaceous compost.
