Leucothoe is prized for its glossy evergreen foliage which changes colour with the seasons. Despite its exotic appearance, it is hardy & quite easy to grow in a shady border with acid soil. The shiny green leaves of Leucothoe ' Curly Red' have an unusual backwards curl, & take on hues of deep red in autumn. Leucothoe also works well combined with other evergreen shrubs in complementary shades of green & gold, & as a backdrop to other plants. In soils which are not acidic, Leucothoe is best grown in a large patio container using ericaceous compost.
