The 2008 Blanc de Blancs Vintage is made exclusively from Chardonnays selected from the best crus of the Cte des Blancs: Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize & Oger. This cuve is only produced in limited quantities & has been aged for 7 years in our cellars before being released onto the market. The result is a champagne which is subtle, light & elegant, with a refreshing trace of minerality. Mid yellow in colour, it has a high toned & aromatically spiced nose, with some elements of crushed apple, revealing good fruit intensity & weight. It is stylish & bright on the palate, with good length & very pure acidity. Ideal as an accompaniment to shellfish. ...

On the nose, the champagne is dominated by white flowers, green apple, brioche & a trace of minerality. On the palate there are notes of stone fruits, a certain nuttiness & a hint of honey supporting the freshness of the acidity. UK stock receives an additional 6 months post-disgorgement ageing so it is ready to drink upon release but cellaring for a few years will reveal greater depths. The aperitif champagne par excellence but one which has sufficient backbone to be drunk with fish & even spicy dishes. Brut Reserve is blended from 30 still base wines from different vineyards, different vintages & the three main grape varieties which dominate the champagne region: Pinot Noir contributes body, depth of character & life-extending tannins & comes from the villages of the Montagne de Reims

Limited stock. An intense, brilliant pink colour. A powerful bouquet discloses concentrated citrus fruit aromas, even stewed strawberries. In the mouth, the balance between minerality & firmness from the tannins & the mature fruit has produced a full-bodied Champagne, full of personality. The finish reveals the wines youthfulness & suggests that it has a bright future both on its own & when paired with food. Produced by Pol Roger, like all its Vintage styles, only in years when growing & harvest conditions can produce grapes of sufficient standard, the Pinot Noir & Chardonnay musts underwent 2 cold settlings before fermentation in stainless steel to preserve the fruit characteristics of the wine. The wine then had 15% still red Pinot Noir wine from the village of Chouilly added to the blend which was then transferred to bottle for its second fermentation & ageing in the cellars. ...

An intense pink peppercorn colour with a fine stream of persistent bubbles. The nose has aromas of red fruits & summer berries. On the palate the first impression is freshness with notes of fragrant wild strawberry, this develops into creamy ripeness with a hint of vanilla. If the wine is allowed to blossom in the glass, a further layer of citrus aromas appears, with notes of grapefruit on the finish. The wine boasts a linear structure & rare finesse complemented by intensity of flavour. This is a Rose Champagne with great personality. The Brut Rose 2008 is the ideal choice to accompany fish such as grilled salmon or even sushi. It also marries perfectly with fruit tarts & other fruit desserts; try pairing with a forced Rhubarb fool, the sharpness of the fruit complementing the elegant structure of the wine. ...

The mouth is full & fresh with spicy floral notes (wallflower or nasturtium), underpinned with candied yellow fruit. The finish is long & dry. This is a classy mid-term vintage from Pol Roger that will continue to improve for at least 5 years in bottle & in magnum for 10-12 years. Typically this has the power to match fine dining & would work well with lobster or other crustaceans as well as rich or pungent or spicy dishes. Vintage champagne is by definition the wine of a single year & it must rely on the success of that harvest alone. Vintage champagne is therefore produced only when all the necessary components of climate, grape quality & ripeness at harvest come together for the winemaker to produce a wine of optimum intensity, structure & balance. The growing season of 1999 was marked by exceptional warmth & rain, with some heavy hail in May which devastated the vines in some communes. Growth was vigorous, necessitating some green pruning. The grapes were in good condition at harvest time which opened on 19th September & closed 1st October. Fortunately the heavy rain which fell at times during this period did not spoil a record harvest (19, 000 kg/ha) with a good maturity (9.9% vol). Delicate pale lemon. The nose is opulent in its youth displaying ripe stone fruits on the nose, candied lemon peel & grapefruit. Creamy autolytic mouthfeel with a refreshing backbone of acidity. The wine has a persistence of length & character. The wine is more accessible in its youth compared to Brut Vintage 2008, but will last for the next decade & onwards. ...

The wine displays a mid golden yellow colour & continuous stream of delicate bubbles. An elegant & powerful nose with toasted brioche over fresh quince, peach & apricot with an underlying floral character & high toned cinnamon spice with hints of lime leaf. A balanced palate with weight, power, a velvety texture & a long persistent pure acidity. With weight & complexity characteristic both of the terroir & vintage. A long aftertaste with a light touch of citric acidity bringing together a wine of undeniable majesty. Already drinking well now & will continue to improve over the medium term. The year of the millenium provided plenty of challenges for the vigneron. A warm midwinter & early spring was interspersed with hailstorms. May was dry, but in July there was severe hail. Thankfully finne weather returned in August & it remained warm & dry to the end of the harvest. The potential degree was satisfactory, total acidity average to low & p Hs fairly high. The tartaric acid content of the must was the lowest since 1970. The clear wines were very good to taste. Churchill's relationship with Pol Roger dates back to 1945, although he had been a loyal customer as far back as 1908. At a luncheon given by the British ambassador to France after the liberation of Paris, Churchill met the charming & captivating Odette Pol-Roger & began a friendship, indulged by his wife Clementine, which lasted until Sir Winston's death in 1965. Each year on his birthday, Odette would send him a case of vintage champagne. In honour of his friendship, Churchill named one of his favourite racehorses after her, & made sure that she was invited to lunch at the British embassy every time he was in Paris. Despite never actually visiting 44 Avenue de Champagne, Churchill proclaimed it 'the most drinkable address in the world'. So close was his relationship with the family that, on Churchill's death, Pol Roger put black-bordered labels on the bottles destined for the UK. In 1975, Pol Roger went one step further & named their prestige cuvee after him, making it in the robust, mature style that he liked so much. ...
