With U.S. intelligence agencies wracked by internal power struggles & paralyzed by bureaucracy, the President is forced to establish his own clandestine group
- Covert-One
- selected from the very best operators America has to offer. It is only activated as a last resort, when the threat is on a global scale & time is running out. In Northern Uganda an American Special Forces team is wiped out by a group of normally peaceful farmers. Video of the attack shows even women & children possessing almost supernatural speed & strength, consumed with a rage that makes them immune to pain, fear, & all but the most devastating injuries. Covert-One's top operative, Army microbiologist Colonel Jon Smith, is sent to investigate the attack & finds evidence of a parasitic infection that for centuries has been causing violent insanity & then going dormant. This time, though, it's different. The infection is purposely being kept alive & the director of Iranian Intelligence is in Uganda trying to make a deal for a biological weapon to unleash on the West. As Smith & his team are cut off from all outside support, they begin to suspect that forces much more powerful than the Iranians are in play forces that can be traced to Washington itself.

Air bags cause accidents, because well-protected drivers take more risks. This well-documented truth comes as a surprise to most people, but not to economists, who have learned to take seriously the proposition that people respond to incentives. In The Armchair Economist, Steven E. Landsburg shows how the laws of economics reveal themselves in everyday experience & illuminate the entire range of human behaviour. Why does popcorn cost so much at the cinema? The 'obvious' answer is that the owner has a monopoly, but if that were the whole story, there would also be a monopoly price to use the toilet. When a sudden frost destroys much of the Florida orange crop & prices skyrocket, journalists point to the 'obvious' exercise of monopoly power. Economists see just the opposite: If growers had monopoly power, they'd have raised prices before the frost. Why don't concert promoters raise ticket prices even when they are sure they will sell out months in advance? Why are some goods sold at auction & others at pre-announced prices? Why do boxes at the football sell out before the standard seats do? Why are bank buildings fancier than supermarkets? Why do corporations confer huge pensions on failed executives? Why don't firms require workers to buy their jobs? Landsburg explains why the obvious answers are wrong, reveals better answers, & illuminates the fundamental laws of human behaviour along the way. This is a book of surprises: a guided tour of the familiar, filtered through a decidedly unfamiliar lens. This is economics for the sheer intellectual joy of it. ...

The Archive Photographs Of Easton

This pictorial tour of old Easton contains over 200 photographs, none of which have appeared in previous publications. This evocative collection of images invites you to walk again on the pavement of bygone times and recalls the distinctive character of the district, much of which has been sacrificed for modern tower blocks and the building of Easton Way.

In this book familiar characters from the past are encountered as we wave off charabanc parties and observe children playing in thoroughfares free from traffic and pollution. Within these covers we watch the curtain go up on performances of the Tudor Players back in the 1940's witness weddings and join in some of the street parties of long ago.

The pictures include class groups of all the local schools from
the turn of the century until the 1970's and many shots of streets, shops and public houses long since disappeared.

Anyone who has ever lived or worked in Easton will have their memories rekindled by this fascinating selection which glances back across the years to a time before inner-city development swept away an entire community.

This paperback book has 128 pages and measures: 23.5 x 16.5 x 0.8cm
