Hanyu (Japan) Hanyu Distillery was built in 1941 to manufacture alcohol, but not whisky. Situated on the main Japanese island of Honsh in Hanyu City to the north of Tokyo. Hanyu commenced production of whisky during the 1980s & operated with four washbacks & two stills & lightly malted barley. Production ended in 2000 & Hanyu Distillery was demolished in 2004. Sasanokawa Shuzo, a sake maker from northern Japan, & Ichiro Akuto, a grandson of the original owners, rescued the last casks from Hanyu Distillery which are being released in limited edition bottling of Hanyu single malt whisky & Hanyu single cask whisky.
