The Ardbeg 21 Year Old committee release whisky is the first age statement Ardbeg to be released in years. This long awaited for whisky is perfect & in the words of Mark, ' With Ardbeg Twenty One you are paying the money for the rarity that is obvious, but the liquid you are getting is gorgeous. Less like new Ardbeg's, a lot like older ones. Honest. Raw. No fancy tricks.' Nose: Very coastal at first, with salt-spray & lemon juice. A beautiful sweet peat note mixing with the vanilla from the American oak. Smoked salmon. Sage. Assam tea. Burnt bacon. Palate: unexpectedly clean for an Ardbeg, with a lightly cloying texture. Smoked salmon. The peat is gentle but there's plenty of peppery warmth. Very mossy & herbal: sage & thyme. Hemp. Vanilla returns, perhaps with a touch of floral honey combined. Tinned tomatoes. Finish: The pepper returns on a lingering finish. ...

A 1990 vintage Airigh Nam Beist is a delicious bottling from the ongoing success story that is Ardbeg. Sadly, now discontinued due to exhausted stocks, 'the Beist' was an extremely popular Ardbeg, with an assertive & powerful peatiness & a lovely honeyed edge. Oh, & to avoid further confusion, it's pronounced ' Arry nam Baysht'. Nose: A sweet burst of vanilla, strong notes of sea-salt as to be expected with an Islay single malt. Palate: Once more a sweetness associated with vanilla, followed by a smoky, peaty intensity. Warming on the palate with a slight creamy impact. A salty citrus, think lemons & seaweed nicely integrated with the peat. A sweet aftertaste vanilla with notes of chocolate. Finish: Long & pleasant, a prevailing note of liquorice & smoke. ...

The Ardbeg Alligator Committee Release was given 94 points in Jim Murray’s Bible 2017. It a lovely example of what peat can achieve. It is a very complex & smoky dram. The Alligator in its name comes from the barrels being heavily charred that leaves an inner layer of charcoal that comes to resemble the skin of an alligator. The bottle was released before the mass release “for discussion”. ...

This hotly anticipated official release of Ardbeg Alligator is aged in a similar style to the standard 10 year old, except for the fact that a portion of the whisky was aged in heavily charred barrels. The barrels are charred to such an extent that they start to crack a little on the inside, & this resembles alligator skin, thus the name. Nose: stunning aromas of charcoal, mulled wine & lemon icing sugar. Very creamy, with notes of vanilla & yoghurt, with a huge BBQ note. Some gingerbread & tangy apricots as well as burning brown sugar. Palate: Creamy & zesty, with a huge whack of grapefruit & lemon, as well as BBQ sauce, ginger & orange zest. Like a really toasty rye whiskey in parts, with hints of icing sugar, cocoa, gingernut biscuits & intense smoke. Finish: Sweet & creamy with peppery, crackling peat smouldering away for hours. ...
