This book is a precise & fiercely honest projection of what we know about climate change into the future of one small corner of the planet: the islands of Britain & Irel&. Kohn looks closely at six landscapes & one city to show how our world will have altered over the course of the century. These islands will, compared with the parched Mediterranean lands, let alone a devastated Africa, be fairly benign places to live. But we will have paid a terrible price for our relative good fortune. Our parks will be arid brown fields; private automobile use unheard of; water will be severely rationed; significant stretches of our beloved coastline will have been sacrificed to the sea. Some of our flora & fauna will have vanished; exotic animals & pests will flourish. Vast numbers of marginalized human migrants will be here. Surveillance & restriction of our movements will be taken for granted. Walking in what is left of 'nature' will be nearly impossible. Terrible summer fires in our upland areas will be commonplace. This is a report from the near future that we cannot afford to ignore. ...

This is an exploration of our preoccupation with the weather, as heard on BBC Radi 3: Changing Climates. In his trademark style, Richard Mabey weaves together science, art & memoirs (including his own) to show the weather`s impact on our culture & national psyche. He rambles through the myths of Golden Summers & our persistent state of denial about the winter; the Impressionists` love affair with London smog, seasonal affective disorder (SAD
- do we all get it?) & the mysteries of storm migraines; herrings falling like hail in Norfolk & Saharan dust reddening south-coast cars; moonbows, dog-suns, fog-mirages & Constable`s clouds; the fact that English has more words for rain than Inuit has for snow; the curious eccentricity of country clothing & the mathematical behaviour of umbrella sales. We should never apologise for our obsession with the weather. It is one of the most profound influences on the way we live, & something we all experience in common. No wonder it`s the natural subject for a greeting between total strangers: ` Turned out nice again.`

The extraordinary life of J. M. W Turner, one of Britain`s most admired, misunderstood & celebrated artists J. M. W. Turner is Britain`s most famous landscape painter. Yet beyond his artistic achievements, little is known of the man himself & the events of his life: the tragic committal of his mother to a lunatic asylum, the personal sacrifices he made to effect his stratospheric rise, & the bizarre double life he chose to lead in the last years of his life. A near-mythical figure in his own lifetime, Franny Moyle tells the story of the man who was considered visionary at best & ludicrous at worst. A resolute adventurer, he found new ways of revealing Britain to the British, astounding his audience with his invention & intelligence. Set against the backdrop of the finest homes in Britain, the French Revolution & the Industrial Revolution, this is an astonishing portrait of one of the most important figures in Western art & a vivid evocation of Britain & Europe in flux. Set against this spectacular & ultimately controversial career, Moyle also excavates the private Turner. Psychologically wounded as a child, by a family torn apart by death & mental illness, she suggests a man who could not embrace relationships fully until the very end of his life. Only then did he succumb to his love for the widowed Sophia Booth, concealing this all too human aspect of his life behind an assumed identity. She mines the poignancy of his final years, when, with his health ailing, Turner sought solace in a secret private life that had eluded him before & that he knew would scandalise the new generation of Victorians. ...

Turner`s sketchbooks provide us with a rare & unique opportunity to witness the building blocks, steps & missteps of an artist unparalleled in impact. They give us a privileged look over Turner`s shoulder, allowing us to witness the creation & development of ideas that can be traced through to his most famous paintings. In the absence of detailed written accounts of his extensive travels, the notebooks are also a record of his impressions of the many places he visited across Britain & Europe. This book is the first to survey the full range of Turner`s sketchbooks, beginning with his teenage explorations & culminating in the masterful colour studies of his later years. ...

` The water slips over me like cool silk. The intimacy of touch uninhibited, rising around my legs, over my waist, up to my collarbone. When I throw back my head & relax, the lake runs into my ears. The sound of it is a muffled roar, the vibration of the body amplified by water, every sound felt as if in slow motion... ` Summer swimming... but Jessica Lee
- Canadian, Chinese & British
- swims through all four seasons & especially loves the winter. `I long for the ice. The sharp cut of freezing water on my feet. The immeasurable black of the lake at its coldest. Swimming then means cold, & pain, & elation.` At the age of twenty-eight, Jessica Lee, who grew up in Canada & lived in London, finds herself in Berlin. Alone. Lonely, with lowered spirits thanks to some family history & a broken heart, she is there, ostensibly, to write a thesis. & though that is what she does daily, what increasingly occupies her is swimming. So she makes a decision that she believes will win her back her confidence & independence: she will swim fifty-two of the lakes around Berlin, no matter what the weather or season. She is aware that this particular landscape is not without its own ghosts & history. This is the story of a beautiful obsession: of the thrill of a still, turquoise lake, of cracking the ice before submerging, of floating under blue skies, of tangled weeds & murkiness, of cool, fresh, spring swimming
- of facing past fears of near drowning & of breaking free. When she completes her year of swimming Jessica finds she has new strength, & she has also found friends & has gained some understanding of how the landscape both haunts & holds us. This book is for everyone who loves swimming, who wishes they could push themselves beyond caution, who understands the deep pleasure of using their body`s strength, who knows what it is to allow oneself to abandon all thought & float home to the surface.

Turnpike trusts formed an important part of English life for over 150 years, from about 1690 to 1840, during which time they made a significant contribution to economic development before & during the industrial revolution. Locally & privately funded & usually operated on a relatively small scale, they represented an administrative innovation which recognised & tried to meet the need for an enhanced road transport infrastructure. For the first time road users paid for repairs & improvements to roads, & parishioners hitherto responsible were relieved of an often burdensome charge on local finances. Over 20, 000 miles (32, 000km) of roads were `turnpiked`, & most of these eighteenth- & nineteenth-century roads are still used today. Apart from the roads themselves, the most obvious survivals of turnpike trusts are the scores of neat little tollhouses & hundreds of roadside milestones. This book outlines the origins, development, success & decline of the turnpike trusts & some of the features associated with them. ...
