The Turn of the Screw is the classic ghost story for which Henry James is best remembered. Set in an English country house, it is a chilling tale of the supernatural told by a master of the genre. The Aspern Papers is a tale of Americans in Europe, a theme in which Henry James is at his most assured & accomplished. The author cleverly evokes the drama of the comedie humaine against the majestic setting of a Venetian palace. ...

” David Marquet is the kind of leader who comes around only once in a generation.. .his ideas & lessons are invaluable”. (Simon Sinek, author of Start With Why). Captain David Marquet was used to giving orders. In the high-stress environment of the USS Santa Fe, a nuclear-powered submarine, it was crucial his men did their job well. But the ship was dogged by poor morale, poor performance & the worst retention in the fleet. One day, Marquet unknowingly gave an impossible order, & his crew tried to follow it anyway. He realized he was leading in a culture of followers, & they were all in danger unless they fundamentally changed the way they did things. Marquet took matters into his own hands & pushed for leadership at every level. Before long, his crew became fully engaged & the Santa Fe skyrocketed from worst to first in the fleet. No matter your business or position, you can apply Marquet`s approach to create a workplace where everyone takes responsibility for their actions, people are healthier & happier
- & everyone is a leader.

This book is a precise & fiercely honest projection of what we know about climate change into the future of one small corner of the planet: the islands of Britain & Irel&. Kohn looks closely at six landscapes & one city to show how our world will have altered over the course of the century. These islands will, compared with the parched Mediterranean lands, let alone a devastated Africa, be fairly benign places to live. But we will have paid a terrible price for our relative good fortune. Our parks will be arid brown fields; private automobile use unheard of; water will be severely rationed; significant stretches of our beloved coastline will have been sacrificed to the sea. Some of our flora & fauna will have vanished; &, exotic animals & pests will flourish. Vast numbers of marginalised human migrants will be here. Surveillance & restriction of our movements will be taken for granted. Walking in what is left of `nature` will be nearly impossible. Terrible summer fires in our upland areas will be commonplace. This is a report from the near future that we cannot afford to ignore. ...

This is an exploration of our preoccupation with the weather, as heard on BBC Radi 3: Changing Climates. In his trademark style, Richard Mabey weaves together science, art & memoirs (including his own) to show the weather`s impact on our culture & national psyche. He rambles through the myths of Golden Summers & our persistent state of denial about the winter; the Impressionists` love affair with London smog, seasonal affective disorder (SAD
- do we all get it?) & the mysteries of storm migraines; herrings falling like hail in Norfolk & Saharan dust reddening south-coast cars; moonbows, dog-suns, fog-mirages & Constable`s clouds; the fact that English has more words for rain than Inuit has for snow; the curious eccentricity of country clothing & the mathematical behaviour of umbrella sales. We should never apologise for our obsession with the weather. It is one of the most profound influences on the way we live, & something we all experience in common. No wonder it`s the natural subject for a greeting between total strangers: ` Turned out nice again.`

The extraordinary life of J. M. W Turner, one of Britain`s most admired, misunderstood & celebrated artists J. M. W. Turner is Britain`s most famous landscape painter. Yet beyond his artistic achievements, little is known of the man himself & the events of his life: the tragic committal of his mother to a lunatic asylum, the personal sacrifices he made to effect his stratospheric rise, & the bizarre double life he chose to lead in the last years of his life. A near-mythical figure in his own lifetime, Franny Moyle tells the story of the man who was considered visionary at best & ludicrous at worst. A resolute adventurer, he found new ways of revealing Britain to the British, astounding his audience with his invention & intelligence. Set against the backdrop of the finest homes in Britain, the French Revolution & the Industrial Revolution, this is an astonishing portrait of one of the most important figures in Western art & a vivid evocation of Britain & Europe in flux. Set against this spectacular & ultimately controversial career, Moyle also excavates the private Turner. Psychologically wounded as a child, by a family torn apart by death & mental illness, she suggests a man who could not embrace relationships fully until the very end of his life. Only then did he succumb to his love for the widowed Sophia Booth, concealing this all too human aspect of his life behind an assumed identity. She mines the poignancy of his final years, when, with his health ailing, Turner sought solace in a secret private life that had eluded him before & that he knew would scandalise the new generation of Victorians. ...
