Small size cloth-backed version of a reproduction by Old Folding Maps of A New Map of London around 1800, published by Robert Laurie & James Whittle. The map shows the capital with its main streets & access roads already coloured in as on present-day mapping. Also highlighted are London’s parks & other open green spaces, as well as the boundary of the City of London. Coverage extends north to Kentish Town & Newington Green; east to Bow, Blackwell & Greenwich; south to Peckham, Camberwell & Battersea; & west to include most of Kensington Gardens. This reproduction was taken from what used to be called a “cloth-dissected” map, made when the map itself was cut into sections & each section then individually pasted onto an overall cloth backing for the whole map. In this version the whole map is backed onto cloth in one piece but the gaps between the sections have been reproduced in the printing to preserve the style & the feeling of the original. Suffolk, an original antique map by G. Cole / J. Roper published in London, 1810-1843. Copperplate, coloured. Map size 23 x 17 cm, overall mounted size 38.5 x 32.5 cm. This detailed map of Suffolk is from Dugdale's England & Wales Delineated. The map was drawn by G. Cole & engraved by John Roper for publication first in The Beauties Of England & Wales, issued in parts, from c.1804. Such was the success of the publication that the maps were re-used in other publications, as here. The maps show accurate geographical detail, including the turnpike, mail coach & principal roads, sites of Roman & other historical remains, as well as the seats of the nobility & the gentry, & market towns with their distances from London. The maps also show the division of the counties into hundreds or wapontakes. They are representative of the functional nineteenth-century approach to cartography, yet are not unattractive. Fifty churches in Suffolk, chosen for their beauty, historical or anecdotal interest, are here featured in a series of captivating photographic portraits by David Stanford. They range from bulky Saxon & Norman round tower churches through to a Restoration church influenced by Christopher Wren`s London works. Many of these places of worship suffered the iconoclastic ravages of Puritan zealots, such as William Dowsing, who carried out a series of destructive trips across Suffolk & Cambridgeshire in the 1640s, smashing & obliterating what were seen as `superstitious images`. The results of these raids are visible in churches across the county, although some have miraculously survived relatively unscathed while others have been the object of Victorian restoration programmes, some sensitive, others eccentric.
