This new second edition of Suffolk, part of Bradt`s distinctive Slow series of regional UK guides, remains the only full-blown standalone guide to this gentle but beguiling county. Written by expert local author Laurence Mitchell, this is the guide of choice for anyone wanting to get under the skin of the region & discover what makes it tick. This new edition offers a very personal view of the county, providing up-to-date information on the best places to visit, stay & eat, covering not just popular sights but focusing also on those places beyond the usual tourist trail. Suffolk`s popularity as a destination is not waning, & events such as the Latitude festival in July or the Aldeburgh Music Festival at Britten`s Snape Maltings, not to mention the use of the RSPB`s Minsmere Reserve as a base for BBC`s Springwatch, are all helping to keep the county`s profile raised. Southwold, Aldeburgh, Orford, Walberswick & Dunwich are all covered, as is the great variety of landscapes, from undulating farmland & sandy heaths to extensive forests such as Rendlesham & Thetford in the Brecks, important nature reserves & the soft, dreamy coastal landscapes of river estuaries, remote marshes, reed-beds, beaches, shingle banks, sand spits & dunes. Also included are Constable Country & the Stour valley, Bury St Edmunds, Framlingham, Bungay, Beccles & Halesworth, plus information on Suffolk`s wealth of medieval churches & its Anglo-Saxon heritage, notably the royal ceremonial burial site at Sutton Hoo & the reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village at West Stow. Bradt`s Suffolk makes a virtue of being selective & pointing the reader to the cream of the area. It is organised into locales to encourage `stay put` tourism, with the opportunity to explore each locale thoroughly. There are also plenty of options for car-free travel: walking, cycling, river boats & local buses & trains. Written in an entertaining style, & offering a personal narrative, authoritative information & interesting anecdotes, Bradt`s Suffolk is the ideal companion with which to discover this charming corner of Engl&. ...

Suffolk, an original antique map by G. Cole / J. Roper published in London, 1810-1843. Copperplate, coloured. Map size 23 x 17 cm, overall mounted size 38.5 x 32.5 cm. This detailed map of Suffolk is from Dugdale's England & Wales Delineated. The map was drawn by G. Cole & engraved by John Roper for publication first in The Beauties Of England & Wales, issued in parts, from c.1804. Such was the success of the publication that the maps were re-used in other publications, as here. The maps show accurate geographical detail, including the turnpike, mail coach & principal roads, sites of Roman & other historical remains, as well as the seats of the nobility & the gentry, & market towns with their distances from London. The maps also show the division of the counties into hundreds or wapontakes. They are representative of the functional nineteenth-century approach to cartography, yet are not unattractive. Antique maps from various original publishers are presented on the Stanford ...

Fifty churches in Suffolk, chosen for their beauty, historical or anecdotal interest, are here featured in a series of captivating photographic portraits by David Stanford. They range from bulky Saxon & Norman round tower churches through to a Restoration church influenced by Christopher Wren`s London works. Many of these places of worship suffered the iconoclastic ravages of Puritan zealots, such as William Dowsing, who carried out a series of destructive trips across Suffolk & Cambridgeshire in the 1640s, smashing & obliterating what were seen as `superstitious images`. The results of these raids are visible in churches across the county, although some have miraculously survived relatively unscathed while others have been the object of Victorian restoration programmes, some sensitive, others eccentric. David Stanford`s atmospheric photography captures the spirit of these unique buildings as architectural heritage, as historic monuments & as places of Christian devotion. ...
