Additional two chapters from Robert Thorne bring the story up-to-date, covering the creation of the Channel Tunnel link & the re-opening of the hotel. The book is illustrated with original drawings & reproductions of black & white contemporary photos, as well with drawings & colour photos taken during the restoration work on the site, the interior of the Midland Grand hotel, etc. ...

St Pancras station has long been an iconic landmark on the London landscape. The neo-Gothic spires & multi-coloured brickwork of the Midland Grand hotel & the awesome span of the station's train-shed have made it one of the capital's most distinctive monuments. Simon Bradley traces the history of the station, introducing us to the men behind the architecture, & looks forward to its future as home of Eurostar services to the continent. The Wonders of the World is a series of books that focuses on some of the world's most famous sites or monuments. Their names will be familiar to almost everyone: they have achieved iconic stature & are loaded with a fair amount of mythological baggage. These monuments have been the subject of many books over the centuries, but our aim, through the skill & stature of the writers, is to get something much more enlightening, stimulating, even controversial, than straightforward histories or guides. ...

With its famous hotel, St Pancras is now the London terminus of the Eurostar, with a high speed rail link to the Kent coast & the Channel Tunnel. But it was not always so. Once nearly redundant & threatened with demolition, the station was the London terminus of the Midland Railway, & could proclaim at its opening the largest single span roof in the world. Over GBP800 million saw St Pancras restored & rebuilt for the modern day. Described now as the `world`s most wonderful railway station`, St Pancras is a paragon of Gothic architecture. The St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel utilised large parts of the Midland Grand Hotel & opened in 2011, exactly 138 years after the original was opened. John Christopher tells the story of the rise, decline & rise again of St Pancras as London`s international station. ...

The story of St Peter's begins in the 1st century CE with the Hippodrome of Nero, one of two places where the Apostle Peter may have been crucified. 250 years later Constantine the Great marked the supposed site of Peter's tomb in an ancient cemetery with a great basilica. That in turn was replaced over a hundred-year period by a series of competitive renaissance & baroque Popes using the greatest artists of their day, all seeking to leave their mark on St Peter's. Here Keith Miller offers a rewarding account of a world-famous building: who built it; what it looks like & why; &, how it affects the tourist or pilgrim. An intricate history, telling biography & the study of great art & architecture all play their part in a book that is a brilliant debut. ...
