` The most important book about our economy & society to be published in my lifetime` Irvine Welsh From Paul Mason, the award-winning Channel 4 presenter, Postcapitalism is a guide to our era of seismic economic change, & how we can build a more equal society. Over the past two centuries or so, capitalism has undergone continual change
- economic cycles that lurch from boom to bust
- & has always emerged transformed & strengthened. Surveying this turbulent history, Paul Mason wonders whether today we are on the brink of a change so big, so profound, that this time capitalism itself, the immensely complex system by which entire societies function, has reached its limits & is changing into something wholly new. At the heart of this change is information technology: a revolution that, as Mason shows, has the potential to reshape utterly our familiar notions of work, production & value; & to destroy an economy based on markets & private ownership
- in fact, he contends, it is already doing so. In this groundbreaking, Sunday Times top ten book, Mason shows how, from the ashes of the recent financial crisis, we have the chance to create a more socially just & sustainable global economy.

The steep western ridge of the Cotswolds has a commanding view of the Severn Valley, the Malvern Hills & the Forest of Dean. To the north is an equally impressive view of the Vale of Evesham, the Worcester plain & Bredon Hill. The source of many rivers, including the Windrush & Thames, are found in the high uplands dipping towards the Oxford plain, & in the south sits the city of Bath. The 790 square miles that comprise the Cotswolds formed between 200 to 150 million years ago & were then shifted, twisted & arranged over the next 100 million. Moreover, in the past ten thousand years, human activity has further shaped & altered the land through agriculture, trade, transport, building of towns & cities
- constantly changing, but at the same time adding to the stunning appearance of this landscape. Dry stonewalls criss-cross hills & valleys marking out arable fields & pastures for sheep & cattle, farmhouses built in Oolithic weathered limestone, villages & towns built of the same honey-coloured stone all radiate the warm mellow colour of this local bedrock
- the very foundation of this range of hills.A Postcard from the Cotswolds describes this outstandingly picturesque region in words & pictures as immortalised by earlier generations of photographers & artists for countless tourists & visitors to this exceptional part of Engl&.

This is a collection of 100 postcards, each featuring a different jacket from Pelican Books, Penguin`s iconic non-fiction series. Covering subjects from socialism to sex, psychoanalysis to atomic physics, & written by great thinkers ranging from Sigmund Freud to Martin Luther King, Pelican brought accessible, intelligent books to a generation, making knowledge everybody`s property. In 1936 Allen Lane, the founder of Penguin, overheard a woman at a King`s Cross Station bookstall asking for `one of those Pelican books`. She meant Penguin, but Lane, concerned a rival might snatch up the name, decided to launch a new range of non-fiction books. Pelican was born. Allen Lane said he `believed in the existence in this country of a vast reading public for intelligent books at a low price, & staked everything on it`. The gamble paid off. Customers queued in the streets for the first Pelican, George Bernard Shaw`s The Intelligent Woman`s Guide to Socialism, which sold a million copies in six weeks. In the years to come Pelican Books
- including H. G. Wells` A Short History of the World, Freud`s Psychopathology of Everyday Life & J. K. Galbraith`s The Affluent Society, as well as guides to everything from jazz to witchcraft, guerrilla warfare to smashing atoms
- would educate a generation. They became, in Lane`s words, `the true everyman`s library for the twentieth century`.

The Bolshevik revolution of 1917 was one of the most important events of the 20th century. It has been studied from many angles, but never before from the visual perspective of postcards, a surprising number of which were published around the event, many in Russia but also France, Engl&, the USA & other countries. This book brings together a collection of these postcards chronicling the events leading up to the Russian revolution, from the murder in 1905 of Grand Duke Alexander by revolutionaries to the first public events commemorating the newly founded Union of Soviet Socialist Republic. It captures the essence of empire in its dying days, the fading splendour of monarchy, the social unrest & the mood of revolution which swept through the country. It also looks at the after-effects of revolution, including the great famine of 1921. There are satirical sketches of Russia`s rulers, royalist & revolutionary propaganda, portraits of the royal family & pictures of ordinary people in the streets. There are also rare images of the leaders of the revolution. This is a unique visual record & provides a fascinating insight into one of the defining events of the 20th century. ...

The First World War was unique in being fought largely in trenches. Men ate, slept, fought, played, sang, prayed, & died in the trenches. This book brings together a collection of postcards which portray this strange subterranean world in its various manifestations. The cards have been selected to show how life progressed from day to day in & out of the trenches. We see wounded men smiling obligingly for the camera; others appear to be suffering from the onslaught of boredom. Some take part in a mock party with very meagre provisions. One image shows a group of men kneeling to receive communion before going into battle. The tone of postcards encompasses the range of human experience, from sombre realism to light-hearted humour. There is also the soldier`s good-natured lightly smutty card. This is a fascinating insight into the everyday lives & behaviour of the men who fought one of the most gruesome wars in history. ...
