An attractive map of Nottinghamshire with a vignette view of St Mary's Church. James Pigot started his career as an engraver for Dean's Manchester Directory, but later set up his own business publishing the London & Provincial New Commercial Directory. For the third edition of 1827, a number of maps were added. In 1830, these maps were separately published in Pigot & Co's British Atlas Of The Counties Of England.. ., which was reprinted until 1857. These lithograph maps bear the imprint of H.G. Collins in Paternoster Row & show accurate geographical detail, including the expanding railway network, surrounded by a floral border. Map size 17.5 x 23 cm with a mount size of 33 x 38.5 cm.A detailed nineteenth-century map of Nottinghamshire that was published in the atlas, The British Atlas; Comprising A Complete Set Of County Maps, Of England & Wales; & Plans Of Cities & Principal Towns in 1810. The map was drawn by G. Cole & engraved by John Roper for publication in The Beauties Of England & Wales, that was published in parts, from c.1804. Such was the success of the publication that the maps were re-used in other publications, as here. The maps show accurate geographical detail, including the turnpike, mail coach & principal roads, sites of Roman & other historical remains, as well as the seats of the nobility & the gentry, & market towns with their distances from London. The maps also show the division of the counties into hundreds or wapontakes. They are representative of the functional nineteenth-century approach to cartography, yet are not unattractive. A reproduction of a very pretty wall map of the world from mid-17th century, size 62x 53cm / (24.5”x 21” approx), with the two hemispheres accompanied by circular insets showing the Polar Regions & surrounded by colourful drawings. Drawn by Frederick de Wit (1629/1630 – 1706) & originally published in Amsterdam around 1665, the map is not dated but Australia is annotated as “ Detecta 1644”. The map provides a fascinating picture of the extent of geographical knowledge in mid-17th century: quite accurate presentation of the coastlines of Africa or South America but not much was known then about western North America & eastern Australia is still blank. Equally contrasting are the two insets of the Polar Region, already much of the Arctic is shown but nothing around the “ Polus Antarcticus”. Lovely colourful drawings surrounding the map present a very jolly picture of the world full of wine & happy cherubs! ...
