Neasden in 1894 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Two versions for this area have been published to present how it developed across the years. The 1894 map is centred on what was then the rural village of Neasden, stretching from Kingsbury Bridge to Dudding Hill Junction. Features include the Metropolitan railway works, Neasden station, the MR Midland & South Western Junction line with Dudding Hill station, The Grange, Dollis Hill Lane, Dollis Hill Villa, Neasden Lane, Blackbird Hilll Farm. On the reverse is an extract from the 1st Edition map showing Neasden village in 1878. The 1936 map shows a much more fully developed area, now busy with railways
- the LNER (i.e. Great Central) lines & a larger Met depot
- & with the North Circular Road cutting through Neasden. Another major feature is the Post Office Research Centre at Dollis Hill, where an emergency Cabinet Office was situated during the war. Other features include Gladstone Park, Dollis Hill station, Dollis Hill House, pencil works, etc. A selection of street directory entries is on the reverse, including Dollis Hill Lane, Dudden Hill Lane, Neasden Lane & North Circular Road. About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25” OS Series: Selected towns in Great Britain & Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th & early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping & reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4, 340). On the reverse most maps have historical notes & many also include extracts from contemporary directories. Tables are also provided listing facilities in state parks & recreational area, national lands, campgrounds, plus wildlife viewing/hunting/fishing sites with lists of species. Each title in this De Lorme series covers one state & presents it at a scale much more detailed than used on most state road maps. Particularly popular areas are often also presented on enlargements. In addition to all the usual information shown on topographic maps at this scale, detailed presentation of the road and rail networks, rural tracks and paths, etc, the maps also show campsites. The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, with margin ticks for latitude and longitude at 1` intervals.
