Mt Ushba – Mestia area of the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia at 1:50, 000 on a double-sided, contoured & GPS compatible map from Geoplan, with an overprint providing tourist information including local accommodation & sights. This is the WATERPROOF & TEAR-RESISTANT edition of the map, which is also available in a paper version. Maps in this series have contours at 20m intervals, with additional relief shading & numerous spot heights, plus colouring & graphics to indicate different types of terrain (e.g. glaciers, passable or impassable swamps, moraine, etc) & vegetation (woodl&, orchards, vineyards, grassy cover, etc). Road network distinguished between local paved or unpaved roads, dirt tracks, forest roads & footpaths. Railways, cable car lines & funiculars are also included. A range of small unobtrusive icons indicate local services, tourist facilities & places of interest, including accommodation (hotels, B& Bs, campgrounds), different places of worship & historical sights, sport & recreational grounds & areas, medical facilities, etc. Each map has a 1km UTM grid, plus latitude & longitude margin ticks at intervals of 1’. Mt Ziria in a series of waterproof & tear-resistant hiking maps at scales varying from 1:50, 000 to 1:10, 000, with a UTM grid for GPS users. Contour interval varies depending on the scale, on most maps it is 20m. Relief shading, spot heights, springs, seasonal streams &, in most titles, landscape/l&-use variations, e.g. forests, orchards, or vineyards provide additional information on the terrain. Place names are given in both Greek & Latin script. Local footpaths, hostels & mountain huts are clearly marked. For road users intermediate driving distances & petrol stations are shown. Symbols highlight places of interest, including archaeological sites, churches & monasteries, etc. The maps have a UTM grid & margin ticks for latitude & longitude. Map legend

Mount Etna & the surrounding area, including Catania, Taormina & Giardini Naxos, on a very informative map at 1:60, 000 with local footpaths, geology & lava flows with dates, vegetation, fauna, & extensive additional information on the reverse. Produced by SELCA in association with CAI, Club Alpino Italiano, the map is centred on Etna, covering the coast from Taormina to Catania, & bounded in the north by the Alcantara River, & the Simeto in the west. Topographic base with contours at 25m intervals has colouring & graphics showing the geology & ancient or historical lava flows, plus indicating domes, fissures, craters & pits, etc. Where appropriate, dates of eruptions are marked, with information updated to include 2009. Symbols indicate various kinds of vegetation plus 30 types of local fauna. 14 best know hiking paths on Etna are highlighted on the map & cross-referenced to a list which indicates the degree of difficulty & approximate walking times. Icons provide tourist information including mountain shelters, panoramic views, lava tunnels, beaches, harbours & marinas, etc. Interesting locations are prominently highlighted. On sea bathymetric information is also provided. The map has no geographical coordinates. Mt Pumori, sheet no. 2886-16, in the topographic survey of Nepal at 1:50, 000 published by the Nepali Government in the late 1990s & early 2000s & produced from remote sensing data by Finnish cartographers as part of that country’s international aid program. The maps cover 15’ x 15’ quadrangles.IMPORTANT – PLEASE NOTE BEFORE ORDERING: AVAILABILITY: although, theoretically at least, still in print, these maps are very difficult to get locally in Nepal and/or from various suppliers elsewhere specializing in obtaining such maps. DELIVERIES MAY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS OR EVEN MONTHS.PROBLEMS WITH PLACE NAMES: reports from previous users indicate that transliteration of place names differs from that used widely not only on other maps & in guide books but also on the ground itself, in road signs & in the tourist & trekking industry in general. Whilst most names are similar enough to be easily recognizable, e.g. Namche Bajar for Namche Bazar or Lantan for Langtang, we have been told of confusion & difficulties arising from different spellings appearing on these maps.TREKKING ROUTES & TOURIST INFORMATION: whilst the maps show foot trails & mark locations of temples, etc, they carry no specific trekking information. Major trekking routes & places of interest are not highlighted. There is no marking for base camps & other tourist facilities. Map specifications: Contours are at 40m intervals, with graphics and/or coloring to show various features of the terrain (glaciers with moraines & crevasses, quarries, gravel or clay pits, etc.) & vegetation (forests, bush, grass, orchards & plantations, etc). Additional comments such as “open mixed forest mainly bajh & pine” annotate many area. The maps have numerous spot heights, but relatively few peaks are named. Areas outside the country’s borders are left blank. Settlements in remote areas are indicated by markings for individual buildings & the placing of names does not always make it clear which group of buildings they refer to. Road network distinguishes between major & minor foot trails. Symbols mark features such as temples, schools & hospitals, police stations, etc. Also shown are the country’s administrative divisions. The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus latitude & longitude lines at intervals of 5’. Map legend & all the text is in English. Coverage: the whole country is now covered, with the north at 1:50, 000, plus central & southern Nepal at 1:25, 000. The two series are complementary, do not overlap & use the same grid & numbering system (apart from the Lumbini Zone, where a different grid & numbering are used).
