` This is my manifesto for morning. There is an energy in the earlier hours, an awareness I enjoy. In today`s world we tend to wake as late as we can, timed to when we have to work. But we don`t need to chase the day.` In Morning, Allan Jenkins shows how getting up earlier even once a week or month can free us to be more imaginative, to maybe read, to walk, to write. He talks to other early risers such as Jamie Oliver & Samuel West, to poets & painters. We hear from a neuroscientist about sleep, a philosopher about dawn, a fisherman about light. Allan wakes early, he listens, he looks. He introduces us to a secret world. This is a celebration of dawn & morning: the best time of day. ...

Mornings in Jenin is a multi-generational story about a Palestinian family. Forcibly removed from the olive-farming village of Ein Hod by the newly formed state of Israel in 1948, the Abulhejos are displaced to live in canvas tents in the Jenin refugee camp. We follow the Abulhejo family as they live through a half century of violent history. Amidst the loss & fear, hatred & pain, as their tents are replaced by more forebodingly permanent cinderblock huts, there is always the waiting, waiting to return to a lost home. The novel`s voice is that of Amal, the granddaughter of the old village patriarch, a bright, sensitive girl who makes it out of the camps, only to return years later, to marry & bear a child. Through her eyes, with her evolving vision, we get the story of her brothers, one who is kidnapped to be raised Jewish, one who will end with bombs strapped to his middle. But of the many interwoven stories, stretching backward & forward in time, none is more important than Amal`s own. Her story is one of love & loss, of childhood & marriage & parenthood, & finally the need to share her history with her daughter, to preserve the greatest love she has. Set against one of the twentieth century`s most intractable political conflicts, Mornings in Jenin is a deeply human novel
- a novel of history, identity, friendship, love, terrorism, surrender, courage, & hope. Its power forces us to take a fresh look at one of the defining conflicts of our lifetimes.

In Moro East, Sam & Sam Clark renew their passion for the food of Spain & the Muslim Mediterranean, but this time they find their inspiration a little closer to home.. .in an East End allotment. Bordered by the River Lea & the Grand Union Canal, on its own little isl&, Manor Garden allotments may seem a world away from Moorish Spain or Morocco. However, once beyond the gates, you are transported to the Eastern Mediterranean by a community of Turks & Cypriots who cultivate & cook an extraordinary range of ingredients, many of which are integral to the food served at Moro. It is here that Sam & Sam took on their very first allotment. Moro East follows a year in the life of this East End allotment, reflected in recipes that are unusual without being daunting. Sam & Sam experiment with plants that can be eaten at various different stages of their growth; they include recipes for parts of the crop that might otherwise be discarded (celery leaves, pea shoots, poppy leaves), even making use of produce that does not ripen, such as green tomatoes. They also offer recipes to use up the gluts of produce at the end of the growing season, such as chilli jam, tomato preserve & pickled garlic. Many of the recipes reflect everyday activities at the allotment
- Turkish women rolling flatbreads or clipping the young vine leaves to make dolmades, families gathering to grill kebabs at the weekend
- & the spirit of the community is captured in the photographs & the dishes. The 150 imaginative & seasonal recipes include Moro favourites & new combinations such as pigeon salad with figs, chickpeas & pomegranate molasses, tortilla with onion tops, & courgette & yoghurt soup. With the allotment set to be bulldozed in 2007 to make way for the 2012 Olympics, Moro East documents the last ever growing season for Sam & Sam & the unique men & women of Manor Garden allotments.

Mornings In Mexico

Much of D.H. Lawrence`s life was defined by his passion for travel and it was those peripatetic wanderings that gave life to some of his greatest novels. In the 1920s, Lawrence travelled several times to Mexico, where he was fascinated by the clash of beauty and brutality, purity and darkness that he observed there. The diverse and evocative essays that make up ”Mornings in Mexico” - ”Market Day”, ”Dance of the Sprouting Corn”, ”The Hopi Snake Dance” - bring to life the elemental simplicity of the Zapotec Indians in Mexico, the intense, dark rhythms of the Indians in the American South West and are brightly adorned with simple and evocative details sharply observed: piles of fruit in a village market, strolls in a courtyard filled with hibiscus and roses, the play
of light on an adobe wall. It was during his time in Mexico that Lawrence re-wrote ”The Plumed Serpent”, which is infused with his own experiences there. The spirited eloquence and beauty of the essays in ”Mornings in Mexico” thus illuminate the inspiration behind of one of Lawrence`s most loved works and immerse the reader in a portrait of the country like no other.
