Mesty Croft in 1888 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Two versions have been published for this area. The map covers the Mesty Croft area east of Wednesbury, including the eastern edge of Wednesbury itself & the hamlet of Hall Green. Features include the Tame Valley Canal, Hall Green area, Brunswick Park, Burrs Colliery, short stretch of LNWR line, tramways, Oakeswell Hall, South Staffordshire Tube Works, Hope Patent Tube Works, Imperial Tube Works, Globe Tube Works, Balls Hill Colliery, Millfield Colliery, Moorlands Colliery (disused), some mineral tramways, Friar Park Farm, old air shafts, old shafts, etc. On the reverse of the 1888 version are entries A to K from an 1889 directory of Wednesbury; on the 1902 version is a list of private residents in Wednesbury from a 1912 directory. About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25” OS Series: Selected towns in Great Britain & Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th & early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping & reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4, 340). On the reverse most maps have historical notes & many also include extracts from contemporary directories.
