This attractive map covres the cities of London & Westminster, & present-day north & west London. Emanuel Bowen was one of the most prolific map engravers active in London in the mid-eighteenth century. Beginning his career in about 1714 he continued into the 1760's producing maps of all parts of Britain & the world. Undoubtedly one of the most popular atlases of the early eighteenth century was that with maps engraved by Bowen for John Owen's Britannia Depicta -a pocket-sized atlas of county maps & strip road maps, based on John Ogilby's famous road book of 1675, & first published in 1720. This particular map comes from a 1724 edition of the Britannia Depicta & is immensely detailed & finely engraved with a decorated cartouche, information regarding market days & distances pertaining to the county shown. Middlesex, an original antique map by G. Cole / J. Roper published in London, 1810-1843. Copperplate, coloured. Map size 23 x 17 cm, overall mounted size 38.5 x 32.5 cm. This detailed map of Middlesex is from Dugdale's England & Wales Delineated. The map was drawn by G. Cole & engraved by John Roper for publication first in The Beauties Of England & Wales, issued in parts, from c.1804. Such was the success of the publication that the maps were re-used in other publications, as here. The maps show accurate geographical detail, including the turnpike, mail coach & principal roads, sites of Roman & other historical remains, as well as the seats of the nobility & the gentry, & market towns with their distances from London. The maps also show the division of the counties into hundreds or wapontakes. They are representative of the functional nineteenth-century approach to cartography, yet are not unattractive. An attractive & uncommon miniature map surrounded by vignettes of the county's & London's landmarks. Ramble added these vignettes to Miller's maps of 1821 which were originally published as part of Miller's New Miniature Atlas.... An attractive & uncommon miniature map surrounded by vignettes of London's most famous landmarks: Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, The Tower, Monument, & the recently completed Palace of Westminster. Ramble added these vignettes to Miller's map of 1821, & the peculiar rendering of Big Ben suggests a projected as opposed to an actual appearance.
