Inexplicably out of print since the late 1940s, Messing About in Boats is one of the most charming & evocative accounts of work & leisure afloat in the years either side of the Great War. John Muir describes with humanity & humour the perils of boat acquisition & ownership by the impecunious, & the somewhat mixed talents of the Paid H&. But his account is more than balanced by the interest & pleasure he took in working & sailing in English waters, from the North Sea to the Bristol Channel, in an age long before the marina, GPS & radio. Muir provides two valuable first-hand accounts of work afloat under steam & sail before the War, while he was on half-paid leave between assignments in the Royal Navy: In the North Sea `boxing` fleet of trawlers which remained on station for weeks on end, where he served in his medical capacity, & later in the Bristol Channel Pilot service, where he crewed on a cutter, delivering the pilot to incoming ships in all weathers. His unfavourable views of the qualities of the Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter as a yacht may surprise its aficionados today, but he relented sufficiently to own two of them, Maud & Freda, which feature in the book. ...

Mesty Croft in 1888 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Two versions have been published for this area. The map covers the Mesty Croft area east of Wednesbury, including the eastern edge of Wednesbury itself & the hamlet of Hall Green. Features include the Tame Valley Canal, Hall Green area, Brunswick Park, Burrs Colliery, short stretch of LNWR line, tramways, Oakeswell Hall, South Staffordshire Tube Works, Hope Patent Tube Works, Imperial Tube Works, Globe Tube Works, Balls Hill Colliery, Millfield Colliery, Moorlands Colliery (disused), some mineral tramways, Friar Park Farm, old air shafts, old shafts, etc. On the reverse of the 1888 version are entries A to K from an 1889 directory of Wednesbury; on the 1902 version is a list of private residents in Wednesbury from a 1912 directory. About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25” OS Series: Selected towns in Great Britain & Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th & early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping & reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4, 340). On the reverse most maps have historical notes & many also include extracts from contemporary directories.
