Map No. K-8B in the TPC series: military topographic survey mapping covering the world's land masses & significant islands at 1:500, 000. The maps are useful as general topographical coverage where nothing else is available, although they are designed primarily as flying charts for military aircraft. TPC stands for Tactical Pilotage Chart. Relief is portrayed by a combination of contours (basic interval 500ft, intermediate contours shown where appropriate), elevation tinting & relief shading, plus spot heights. Towns, villages, major roads, railways & airports are shown but please note that many of the smaller settlements are not named & the road information is not necessarily up to date, as compilation & revision dates vary. Some air navigation information also appears on the map, such as radio beacons & restricted flying zones. Each TPC chart has both UTM & latitude/longitude grids overprinted on it, with additional margin ticks. IMPORTANT
- PLEASE NOTE: The series is gradually being withdrawn from sale to the general public & some sheets may no longer be available when ordered by us. Due to the nature of the map projection assembling these sheets to make a larger map is not recommended. in addition, colours used for relief are not constant throughout the series. In some areas of central Africa & South America the maps have blank spaces, reflecting localized deficiencies or inconsistencies in the survey data.

India: A History by John Keay, relates thousands of years of events which took place in the land known as current day India. The country has a history longer than many other existing cultures on earth, but most historical work on India concentrates on the period after the arrival of Europeans, with predictable biases, distortions & misapprehensions. Taking the longest possible view, Keay surveys what is both provable & invented in the historical record. His narrative begins in 3000 B.C. with the complex, & little understood, Harappan period, a time of state formation & the development of agriculture & trade networks. This period coincides with the arrival of Indo-European invaders, the so-called Aryans, whose name, of course, has been put to bad use at many points since. Keay traces the growth of subsequent states & kingdoms throughout antiquity & the medieval period, suggesting that the lack of unified government made the job of the European conquerors somewhat easier--but by no means inevitable. He continues to the modern day, his narrative ending with Indian-Pakistani conflicts in 1998. ...

THE THIRD BOOK IN V.S. NAIPAUL`S ACCLAIMED INDIAN TRILOGY -- WITH A NEW PREFACE BY THE AUTHOR Much has changed since V. S. Naipaul`s first trip to India & this fascinating account of his return journey focuses on India`s development since independence. Taking an anti-clockwise journey around the metropolises of India -- including Bombay, Madras, Calcutta, & Delhi -- Naipaul offers a kaleidoscopic, layered travelogue, encompassing a wide collage of religions, castes, & classes at a time when the percolating ideas of freedom threatened to shake loose the old ways. The brilliance of the book lies in Naipaul`s decision to approach this shifting, changing land from a variety of perspectives: the author humbly recedes, allowing the Indians to tell the stories of their own lives, & a dynamic oral history of India emerges before our eyes. India: A Million Mutinies Now is a truly perceptive work whose insights continue to inform travellers of all generations to India. ` Brilliantly enjoyable.. . Everybody should read him` Sunday Telegraph ` With this book he may well have written his own enduring monument, in prose at once stirring & intensely personal, distinguished both by style & critical acumen` Financial TImes ...
