This sumptuous visual history explores London as depicted by artists over the last few hundred years. Although the first city of London was established in the Roman period, the story of London in art really begins in the 17th century, with the rise of the panoramic city view as a painting genre, & continues to this day. Despite London`s tumultuous history
- the rise & fall of Empire, attacks from above in two world wars, relentless expansion into the surrounding villages & suburbs
- it nevertheless becomes clear that many of the city`s landmarks remain surprisingly constant.

London in the eighteenth century was very much a new city, risen from the ashes of the Great Fire. With thousands of homes & many landmark buildings destroyed, it had been brought to the brink. But the following century was a period of vigorous expansion, of scientific & artistic genius, of blossoming reason, civility, elegance & manners. It was also an age of extremes: of starving poverty & exquisite fashion, of joy & despair, of sentiment & cruelty. Society was fractured by geography, politics, religion & history. & everything was complicated by class. As Daniel Defoe put it, London really was a `great & monstrous Thing`. Jerry White`s tremendous portrait of this turbulent century explores how & to what extent Londoners negotiated & repaired these open wounds. We see them going about their business as bankers or beggars, revelling in an enlarging world of public pleasures, indulging in crimes both great & small
- amidst the tightening sinews of power & regulation, & the hesitant beginnings of London democracy. In the long-awaited finale to his acclaimed history of London over 300 years, Jerry White introduces us to shopkeepers & prostitutes, men & women of fashion & genius, street-robbers & thief-takers, as they play out the astonishing drama of life in eighteenth-century London.

London in the nineteenth century was the greatest city mankind had ever seen. Its wealth was dazzling. Its horrors shocked the world. As William Blake put it, London was `a Human awful wonder of God`. It was a century of genius
- of Blake, Thackeray & Mayhew, of Nash, Faraday, Disraeli & Dickens. Jerry White`s dazzling book is the first in a hundred years to explore London`s history over the nineteenth century as a whole. We see the destruction of old London & the city`s unparalleled suburban expansion. We see how London absorbed people from all over Britain, from Europe & the Empire. We see how Londoners worked & played. Most of all, we see how they tried to make sense of their city & make it a better place in which to live. Emerging clearly from this eloquent & richly-detailed overview is the London we see about us today.

In 1901, London was the greatest city the world had seen in size, wealth & grandeur. Yet it was also a city where poverty & disease were rife. London in 2001 was no longer among the world`s very largest cities, but was still one where vast wealth was displayed
- alongside beggars sleeping rough. Such paradoxes are among the defining experiences of living in London in this extraordinary century, & in this colourful book Jerry White tells the story not just of London, but of Londoners too. He examines the changes to the worlds of work, transport, popular culture, politics & government & shows how London affects its inhabitants, shaping their lives & being shaped in turn by them. Beautifully illustrated & with a wealth of detail, this is a definitive & highly readable history of London in the twentieth century. Winner of the Wolfson History Prize.
