Mudlarking, searching the Thames foreshore, has a long tradition: mudlarks used to be small boys grubbing a living from scrap. Today`s mudlarks unearth relics of the past, from Roman tiles to elegant Georgian pottery. Here are Ted Sandling`s most evocative finds, gorgeously photographed in colour. Together they create a mosaic of everyday London life through the centuries, touching on ideas of Journeys, Pleasure & Vice, Industry, Adornment & Comfort. There are two themes behind the account: celebrating the beauty of small things, & making sense of the intangible connection that found objects give us to the individuals who lost them. An evocative & detailed text places the fragments back in the objects they came from, & places the objects in the flow of London`s history. The French fold jacket is printed on the reverse with a map of access points to the river, & the book concludes with advice on how to start mudlarking yourself. ...

” London in Landscape” can be properly described as a labour of love for young artist Karen Neale. Since June 2005 she has been braving all climates in order to capture, in her own extraordinary, inimitable style, the different faces of the country`s capital, in all seasons. From Bow Street to Chinatown, from Buckingham Palace to Smithfield Market, from the Tate Modern to Trafalgar Square, Karen has brought her unique talent to bear on the landmarks of this great city & created a tremendous record of its everyday life. Amazingly, Karen draws entirely in biro on A5 sketchpads
- hence the format of the book
- carefully colouring afterwards. Each drawing can take her up to ten hours standing in situ to complete, & she has had many unusual experiences during the process.

London in Maps: a changing perspective, published by The Geo Information Group as part of the London Mapping Festival 2011 – 2012, is a truly fascinating collection of a diverse range of maps of the capital, probably the most mapped place on earth. The book is a testament to the variety of the cartographic art & provides many excellent examples of how cartography has developed to meet the requirements of an expanding & rapidly changing city – from the earliest attempts to map Elizabethan London to modern, digitally produced utility mapping survey by Radio Location & Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) techniques. From its wide range of sources the book illustrates just about all the different types of mapping: historical maps & satellite imagery, plans of present day shopping malls & Victorian Booth poverty maps, aerial photography & humorous representation of the capital by artists., etc. Many famous cartographers & publishers are included, among them mapping both from our founder, Edward Stanford, & from our present day colleagues who produced a series of London Borough maps. A brief history of Edward Stanford Ltd is included on page 192 among the list of the contributors. ...

This sumptuous visual history explores London as depicted by artists over the last few hundred years. Although the first city of London was established in the Roman period, the story of London in art really begins in the 17th century, with the rise of the panoramic city view as a painting genre, & continues to this day. Despite London`s tumultuous history
- the rise & fall of Empire, attacks from above in two world wars, relentless expansion into the surrounding villages & suburbs
- it nevertheless becomes clear that many of the city`s landmarks remain surprisingly constant.

London in the eighteenth century was very much a new city, risen from the ashes of the Great Fire. With thousands of homes & many landmark buildings destroyed, it had been brought to the brink. But the following century was a period of vigorous expansion, of scientific & artistic genius, of blossoming reason, civility, elegance & manners. It was also an age of extremes: of starving poverty & exquisite fashion, of joy & despair, of sentiment & cruelty. Society was fractured by geography, politics, religion & history. & everything was complicated by class. As Daniel Defoe put it, London really was a `great & monstrous Thing`. Jerry White`s tremendous portrait of this turbulent century explores how & to what extent Londoners negotiated & repaired these open wounds. We see them going about their business as bankers or beggars, revelling in an enlarging world of public pleasures, indulging in crimes both great & small
- amidst the tightening sinews of power & regulation, & the hesitant beginnings of London democracy. In the long-awaited finale to his acclaimed history of London over 300 years, Jerry White introduces us to shopkeepers & prostitutes, men & women of fashion & genius, street-robbers & thief-takers, as they play out the astonishing drama of life in eighteenth-century London.

London in the nineteenth century was the greatest city mankind had ever seen. Its wealth was dazzling. Its horrors shocked the world. As William Blake put it, London was `a Human awful wonder of God`. It was a century of genius
- of Blake, Thackeray & Mayhew, of Nash, Faraday, Disraeli & Dickens. Jerry White`s dazzling book is the first in a hundred years to explore London`s history over the nineteenth century as a whole. We see the destruction of old London & the city`s unparalleled suburban expansion. We see how London absorbed people from all over Britain, from Europe & the Empire. We see how Londoners worked & played. Most of all, we see how they tried to make sense of their city & make it a better place in which to live. Emerging clearly from this eloquent & richly-detailed overview is the London we see about us today.

London in the 1960s was the embodiment of everything that was inspirational, innovative & progressive. Powered by the three key elements of youth, affluence & the mass media, the city became the hub of sixties pop culture, with its bold & creative spirit attracting an international cast of artists & luminaries in all fields, from pop music & fashion to literature & the visual arts. While a new aristocracy of rockstars & trendsetters ruled the roost, Pop art took a witty & detached view of contemporary consumerism & architecture looked towards a utopian future.
