Leicestershire, an original antique map by T. Moule, published in London, 1831 -1837. A steel plate engraving, coloured. Map size 19 x 26.5 cm with a mount size of 34.5 x 41 cm. Views of Donington & Belvoir castles & fox hunting scenes indicate the rural & traditionally English nature of this county. Maps by Thomas Moule (1784-1851) are probably, with those by Speed, the best known of all series of English county maps. Moule also produced a number of town plans. Issued from 1830 the maps combine a clarity of cartographic style with immense detail, by way of vignette views, as well as scenes & portraits relating to the county or town shown. The maps are often set within a gothic architectural or floral surround, into which armorial devices & so on are worked. The 57 maps & plans were originally issued as a part-work & remain as popular today as they were in the early years of Queen Victoria's reign. Map size 23 x 17.5 cm with a mount size of 39.5 x 34 cm.A detailed nineteenth-century map of Leicestershire that was published in the atlas, The British Atlas; Comprising A Complete Set Of County Maps, Of England & Wales; & Plans Of Cities & Principal Towns in 1810. The map was drawn by G. Cole & engraved by John Roper for publication in The Beauties Of England & Wales, that was published in parts, from c.1804. Such was the success of the publication that the maps were re-used in other publications, as here. The maps show accurate geographical detail, including the turnpike, mail coach & principal roads, sites of Roman & other historical remains, as well as the seats of the nobility & the gentry, & market towns with their distances from London. The maps also show the division of the counties into hundreds or wapontakes. They are representative of the functional nineteenth-century approach to cartography, yet are not unattractive.
