This detailed map of Leicestershire is from Dugdale's England & Wales Delineated. The map was drawn by G. Cole & engraved by John Roper for publication first in The Beauties Of England & Wales, issued in parts, from c.1804. Such was the success of the publication that the maps were re-used in other publications, as here. The maps show accurate geographical detail, including the turnpike, mail coach & principal roads, sites of Roman & other historical remains, as well as the seats of the nobility & the gentry, & market towns with their distances from London. The maps also show the division of the counties into hundreds or wapontakes. They are representative of the functional nineteenth-century approach to cartography, yet are not unattractive. An attractive & uncommon miniature map surrounded by vignettes of the county's landmarks. Ramble added these vignettes to Miller's maps of 1821 that were originally published as part of Miller's New Miniature Atlas.. .. Leicestershire, an original antique map by T. Moule, published in London, 1831 -1837. A steel plate engraving, coloured. Map size 19 x 26.5 cm with a mount size of 34.5 x 41 cm. Views of Donington & Belvoir castles & fox hunting scenes indicate the rural & traditionally English nature of this county. Maps by Thomas Moule (1784-1851) are probably, with those by Speed, the best known of all series of English county maps. Moule also produced a number of town plans. Issued from 1830 the maps combine a clarity of cartographic style with immense detail, by way of vignette views, as well as scenes & portraits relating to the county or town shown. The maps are often set within a gothic architectural or floral surround, into which armorial devices & so on are worked. The 57 maps & plans were originally issued as a part-work & remain as popular today as they were in the early years of Queen Victoria's reign.
