Jon Sparks’ Cicerone guide to The Lancashire Cycleway is the first comprehensive guide dedicated to cycling in the north-west of Britain. Lancashire is an ideal place to cycle & cycling is a great way to explore the county. There is easy riding on the flat expanses in the west & gentle undulations of the Ribble Way. More exacting challenges are available in the West Pennine Moors & the epic crossing of the Bowland Fells. Despite these remote wildernesses, there are various pubs & accommodation available at each stage of the route. The Cycleway comprises two distinct loops, each around 130 miles in length & meeting at Whalley in the Ribble valley. The guide is organized into two main sections
- the Northern & Southern Loops
- & is suitable for both experienced & casual cyclists. Seasoned cycle tourists can tackle either loop in a weekend, or try to do the whole route in a week. More casual cyclists can also easily complete short sections a day at time, aided by regular access from local railways. There is also helpful advice for those new to cycling or cycle-touring in the extensive introduction. Detailed route descriptions are accompanied by Ordnance Survey extracts mapping the route as well as colour photographs depicting some of the delights of the route.

Enough! For far too long, Lancashire has languished under the grimy pall of smoke & muck & mills & mines, enveloped in outdated condescensions, smothered by the easy dismissals that put down the north of England as just `up there` & `grim`. Thank you very much George Orwell, Monty Python & every London cabbie. But Lancashire is not up there. Lancs is actually situated in the centre of the British Isles. & far from being grim, it is a place of wit & wonder, romance & surprise, a land of exotic influence whose people have always looked outward to sophistications & influences beyond frontiers & seas. Indeed, French writer Honore de Balzac recognised these affinities & yearnings in the Lancashire people when he had one of his characters declare that ` Lancashire is the county where women die of love.` Mock if you like, but then think about it: where is the magnificent thoroughfare that inspired the boulevards of Paris? Where did they go to film ” Brief Encounter”, the most romantic British film ever made? Where did the young Shakespeare dream of & draw on for his inspired imaginings? Join Charles Nevin, ” Fleet Street” journalist & humorist, as he returns to his roots & reveals all this & more. Discover the true Camelot & the beauty that is rugby league. See where Lancastrians go to die, but first visit Lost Lancashire & its great twin cities, Manchester & Liverpool. Mull over why Britain`s greatest comics, from Laurel to Coogan, Formby to Vegas, Dodd to Kay, Fields to Wood, Morecambe & Dawson, have all come from Lancs. Mere coincidence? Give over, & read on.. . ...
