The world of the railways weaves a spell over many people. In this engaging book, railway expert Anthony Lambert presents some of the best stories. From the early days come tales of financial skulduggery & worries that sparks from locomotives might ignite sheep's fleeces. But as the railway transformed the modern world, attitudes changed, & railways were opened to great rejoicing & even religious blessing. The perennial appeal of the steam locomotive generated a pride amongst railwaymen & a fascination among the public. The romantic aspects of the railway were soon celebrated
- & not just the unexpected engagement that came from a snowbound train in the Highlands or the sexual shenanigans of the Orient Express. Here are stories of railway travel, from the palatial carriages of tsars & maharajahs to the open trucks of the 'lower orders', mishaps & faux pas, & tales of how ticket inspectors used to have to hold on to the outside of carriages while clipping tickets. From tales of lonely stations & signal-boxes in Scotl&, to the unlucky engineer eaten by a lion in a carriage in Kenya, Lambert casts his net across railways worldwide to gather the most entertaining material. There are stories here that would enliven even a cheerless commute on the 18.01, & remind you that our railways really were
- & occasionally still are
- full of derring-do, romance & character.

Lambeth & its Palace, the London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, have a long history. Lambeth was also the home of a famous pottery, Vauxhall Motors, & a reviving Festival. On the Lambeth bank of the Thames, the Gunpowder Plot was hatched. & in humdrum Lambeth, the National Theatre was born at the Old Vic, & London`s County Hall built. The new importance of London`s Thames-side South Bank complex, its renovations & the allure of the London Eye have left this area ripe for redevelopment. ...

This book aims to give a visual impression of the northern & western parts of the borough of Lambeth as they appeared in the late nineteenth & early twentieth centuries. Starting from the riverside area at the northern end, historically known as Lambeth (as distinct from the much greater extent of the modern borough), the districts covered include also Vauxhall, South Lambeth, Kennington, Stockwell & Clapham. Strictly speaking, the last-mentioned of these is an odd one out, since only with the local government reorganisation of 1964 did Clapham become part of Lambeth, having always previously been in Wandsworth. The photographs range in date through several generations from the mid-1860s to the Second World War. This book is a must-have for any visitor or resident wanting to understand the origins of Lambeth. ...

In the tradition of Patrick Leigh Fermor & Geoff Dyer, a Grammy-winning producer discovers a powerful & ancient folk music tradition. In a dark record shop in Istanbul, Christopher King uncovered some of the strangest & most hypnotic sounds he had ever heard. The 78s seemed to tap into a primal well of emotion inaccessible to contemporary music. The songs, King learned, were from Epirus, an area straddling southern Albania & northwestern Greece & boasting a folk tradition extending back to the pre-Homeric era. Lament from Epirus is an unforgettable journey into a musical obsession which follows a genre back to the roots of song itself. As King hunts for traces of two long-lost virtuosos, he tells the story of the Roma people who pioneered Epirotic folk music & whose descendants continue the tradition today. His journey becomes an investigation into song & dance`s role as a means of spiritual healing & what this may reveal about music`s original purpose. ...

The eagerly anticipated new Shardlake novel from the number one bestselling author. Summer, 1546. King Henry VIII is slowly, painfully dying. His Protestant & Catholic councillors are engaged in a final & decisive power struggle; whoever wins will control the government of Henry`s successor, eight-year-old Prince Edward. As heretics are hunted across London, & the radical Protestant Anne Askew is burned at the stake, the Catholic party focus their attack on Henry`s sixth wife, Matthew Shardlake`s old mentor, Queen Catherine Parr. Shardlake, still haunted by events aboard the warship Mary Rose the year before, is working on the Cotterstoke Will case, a savage dispute between rival siblings. Then, unexpectedly, he is summoned to Whitehall Palace & asked for help by his old patron, the now beleaguered & desperate Queen. For Catherine Parr has a secret. She has written a confessional book, Lamentation of a Sinner, so radically Protestant that if it came to the King`s attention it could bring both her & her sympathizers crashing down. But, although the book was kept secret & hidden inside a locked chest in the Queen`s private chamber, it has
- inexplicably
- vanished. Only one page has been found, clutched in the hand of a murdered London printer. Shardlake`s investigations take him on a trail that begins among the backstreet printshops of London but leads him & Jack Barak into the dark & labyrinthine world of the politics of the royal court; a world he had sworn never to enter again. Loyalty to the Queen will drive him into a swirl of intrigue inside Whitehall Palace, where Catholic enemies & Protestant friends can be equally dangerous, & the political opportunists, who will follow the wind wherever it blows, more dangerous than either. The theft of Queen Catherine`s book proves to be connected to the terrible death of Anne Askew, while his involvement with the Cotterstoke litigants threatens to bring Shardlake himself to the stake.

Lamjun Himal, sheet no. 2884-09, in the topographic survey of Nepal at 1:50, 000 published by the Nepali Government in the late 1990s & early 2000s & produced from remote sensing data by Finnish cartographers as part of that country’s international aid program. The maps cover 15’ x 15’ quadrangles.IMPORTANT – PLEASE NOTE BEFORE ORDERING: AVAILABILITY: although, theoretically at least, still in print, these maps are very difficult to get locally in Nepal and/or from various suppliers elsewhere specializing in obtaining such maps. DELIVERIES MAY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS OR EVEN MONTHS.PROBLEMS WITH PLACE NAMES: reports from previous users indicate that transliteration of place names differs from that used widely not only on other maps & in guide books but also on the ground itself, in road signs & in the tourist & trekking industry in general. Whilst most names are similar enough to be easily recognizable, e.g. Namche Bajar for Namche Bazar or Lantan for Langtang, we have been told of confusion & difficulties arising from different spellings appearing on these maps.TREKKING ROUTES & TOURIST INFORMATION: whilst the maps show foot trails & mark locations of temples, etc, they carry no specific trekking information. Major trekking routes & places of interest are not highlighted. There is no marking for base camps & other tourist facilities. Map specifications: Contours are at 40m intervals, with graphics and/or coloring to show various features of the terrain (glaciers with moraines & crevasses, quarries, gravel or clay pits, etc.) & vegetation (forests, bush, grass, orchards & plantations, etc). Additional comments such as “open mixed forest mainly bajh & pine” annotate many area. The maps have numerous spot heights, but relatively few peaks are named. Areas outside the country’s borders are left blank. Settlements in remote areas are indicated by markings for individual buildings & the placing of names does not always make it clear which group of buildings they refer to. Road network distinguishes between major & minor foot trails. Symbols mark features such as temples, schools & hospitals, police stations, etc. Also shown are the country’s administrative divisions. The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus latitude & longitude lines at intervals of 5’. Map legend & all the text is in English. Coverage: the whole country is now covered, with the north at 1:50, 000, plus central & southern Nepal at 1:25, 000. The two series are complementary, do not overlap & use the same grid & numbering system (apart from the Lumbini Zone, where a different grid & numbering are used).
