The outbreak of the First World War was `a drama never surpassed`. One hundred years later, the characters still seem larger than life: Archduke Franz Ferdin&, brooding heir to the Habsburg throne; the fanatical Bosnian Serb assassins who plot to murder him; Conrad & Berchtold, the Austrians who exploit the outrage; Kaiser Wilhelm & Bethmann Hollweg, backing up the Austrians; Sazonov, Russian Foreign Minister, trying to live down a reputation for cowardice; Poincare & Paleologue, two French statesmen who urge on the Russians; & not least Winston Churchill, who, alone among Cabinet officials in London, perceives the seriousness of the situation in time to take action. July 1914 tells the story of Europe`s countdown to war through the eyes of these men, between the bloody opening act on 28 June 1914 & Britain`s final plunge on 4 August, which turned a European conflict into a world war. The outbreak of war was no accident of fate. Individual statesmen, pursuing real objectives, conjured up the conflict
- in some cases by conscious intention. While some sought honourably to defuse tensions, others all but oozed with malice as they rigged the decks for war. Dramatic, inevitably tense & almost forensically observed, Sean Mc Meekin`s unique book retells the story of that cataclysmic month, making clear as never before who was responsible for the catastrophe. You will never think the same way again about the origins of the First World War.

Nadine Gordimer’s “ July’s People” is once again another searing insight into the heart of South Africa, & proving why she is on of the most respected authors not just in her native South Africa, but the world over too. The book was written in 1981, more than ten years before the end of apartheid. For years, it has been what is called a ‘deteriorating situation’. Now all over South Africa the cities are battlegrounds: the members of the Smales family – liberal whites – are rescued from the terror by their servant, July, who leads them to refuge in his native village. What happens to the Smales’ & to July gives the reader an unflinching look into the terrifying, tacit understandings & misunderstandings between blacks & whites. Apartheid may be over, but the works of people like Gordimer help to emphasise why it should never be allowed to happen again. ...

Billy Slipper is a fairly normal boy with a definitely not-so-fairly normal family. All he wants to do is add to his ` Collectabillya` (an assortment of weird & wonderful objects he finds) in peace, but his cleaning-mad mum (she even clingfilms the carrots!) & his fantastically horrid twin sister have other ideas. - & then stop Jumblecat from getting stuffed, all with the help of his dad`s milk float. Sounds easy? Well, you just haven`t met Jumblecat yet.

Topographic coverage of mainland Spain at 1:50, 000 in the MTN50 (Mapa Topográfico Nacional) series from the Centro Nacional de Información Geografica, the country’s civilian survey organization. The maps have contours at 20m intervals, enhanced by relief shading, plus colouring and/or graphics to show different types of terrain, vegetation or land use. Boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. In addition to all the usual information featured on topographic mapping at this scale, detailed presentation of the road & rail networks, rural tracks & paths, etc, the maps also show campsites & mountain refuges. On more recent editions some GRs, the official long-distance hiking routes, are also marked (although not as clearly as on hiking maps from other publishers). Each map covers 29.5x 18.5 km (with adjustments in the border or coastal areas). The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus margin ticks for latitude & longitude at 1` intervals. Map legend is in Spanish only.HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT 50K MAP: all the titles in CNIG’s 200K Provincial Road Maps series at 1:200, 000 are overprinted with the grid for the 1:50, 000 maps & can be used to see the area covered by each 50K title. TO SEE THE LIST OF TITLES IN THIS SERIES PLEASE CLICK ON THE SERIES LINK.PLEASE NOTE
- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.

By the award-winning author of The Twin. On a hot summer`s day in June 1969 everyone in the village gathered to welcome Queen Juliana. It would have been an unforgettable day of celebration if only the baker hadn`t been running late with his deliveries & knocked down little Hanne with his br&-new VW van. Years later, Jan arrives on a hot day in June in order to tidy his sister`s grave, & is overcome again with grief & silent fury. Isn`t it finally time to get to the bottom of things? June traces in spellbinding, tender detail how the ripples from one tragic incident spread through a community, a family & down the generations. ” Illuminating”. (Independent). ” Exceptional”. On June 28th, 1919, the Peace was signed in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, five years to the day after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo triggered Europe`s precipitous descent into war. Before long it had become the first conflict to be fought on a global scale. By its end in 1918, four empires had collapsed, & their minority populations, which had never before existed as independent entities, were encouraged to seek self-determination & nationhood. Following on from Haus`s monumental thirty-two Volume series on the signatories of the Versailles peace treaty, The Makers of the Modern World, ” June 28th” looks in greater depth at the smaller nations that are often ignored in general histories, & in doing so seeks to understand the conflict from a global perspective, asking not only how each of the signatories came to join the conflict but also giving an overview of the long-term consequences of their having done so. ...
