East Dulwich & Peckham Rye in 1868 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Three versions for this area have been published, stretching from Redpost Lane (or Redpost Hill) eastward to Peckham Rye Park, & from Fenwick Road southward to Woodwarde Road & Goodrich Road. The 1868 map is still quite open, although Lordship Lane & Crystal Palace Road are shown laid out ready for building. East Dulwich is near the top centre of the map, with Goose Green, St John`s church & East Dulwich House. Peckham Rye is in the north-eastern quarter, with villas to the south including Manilla College, Charlton House & others. Friern Manor House in extensive grounds is near the foot of the map but by the 1914 map countless streets of houses have replaced it. The Peckham & Sutton railway runs through the western half of the map, including Champion Hill (later East Dulwich) & North Dulwich stations. Other features include Dulwich House on the 1868 map. The 1914 version has Constance Road Institution, Southwark Union Infirmary, James Allen`s School, Ruskin Manor, Alleyn`s School & the north part of Camberwell Cemetery. About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25” OS Series: Selected towns in Great Britain & Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th & early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping & reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4, 340). Multicultural, adjacent to London`s wealthy financial district, home to artists & designers of all stripes, funky boutiques & a vibrant night-life, the East End is alive with creative possibility, & its inhabitants are stylishly individual & self-fashioned to the extreme. Photographer Anthony Webb, who travelled the world to photograph the most interesting destinations in Thames & Hudson`s Style City series, has trawled the streets of East London, using his metropolitan savvy to present the colourful characters & inspirational personalities in a heady mix of fashionable portraits animated by aphorisms culled from the wisdom of urban life. ...

The River Thames, with its docks, wharves & associated industries, has been a source of livelihood for generations of East Enders living in the historic riverside neighbourhoods of the former Metropolitan Boroughs of Stepney, Poplar & adjacent areas. From images of the maritime stores of old nautical Limehouse & the silk-weaving houses in Bethnal Green at the turn of the twentieth century, to views of the prefabs in Poplar after the Second World War, this selection recalls how life was lived in the tightly packed streets of the East End. ” East End Neighbourhoods” draws on both private & public pictorial archives to offer a fascinating glimpse into the past of one of the most individual & fascinating quarters of London. ...

For nine-tenths of its history the East End has largely a rural retreat of fields & farms, & later a place of academies, almshouses & asylums, though Spitalfields was home to waves of immigrants & craftsmen. London`s trade brought docks & warehouses, but not much prosperity to the local residents. Though notorious for poverty, the East End was a starting point for many leaders of church & state & for future millionaires. Characters in this vivid story include Dr Barnardo, Ghandi, the Krays, Mosley & Captain Cook. ...

There are few more quintessentially English experiences than supping a pint of ale in a centuries-old public house, where the walls could tell you stories. The East End of London is awash with such places, remarkably so in some respects, given the destruction wreaked by the Great Fire of London, Second World War bombs & post-war planners. Some were around before Shakespeare; others are comparatively recent Victorian additions
- but all have a fascinating story behind them. Journalist & broadcaster Johnny Homer traces the history of the East End`s drinking establishments, taking in the landlords, notable characters, stories & a pint or two along the way. Well researched & beautifully illustrated, London`s East End Pubs provides something for everyone, whether they live in this vibrant part of London or are visiting for the first time.

East End Chronicles

In East End Chronicles, Ed Glinert explores the dark, unusual and arcane stories of East London in his renowned and absorbing style. Medieval burial ground, Victorian hell hole, Blitz bombing target, modern artists’ playground - the East End has always been London’s strange alter ego with an identity unlike anywhere else. Here Glinert tells the dark and arcane stories of its streets and people, exploring everything from the mystics of Wellclose Square to the gory Radcliffe Highway murders, from Hugenot silk merchants to the horrors of the Black Death. Revealing the underbelly of the city as never before, Glinert’s account is at turns both surprising and fascinating.“A nuanced, layered picture…fascinating details and links emerge…It is at moment when chronology is
exploded and past events reappear in new guises that this book is the most interesting.” _The Times Literary Supplement_
