For nine-tenths of its history the East End has largely a rural retreat of fields & farms, & later a place of academies, almshouses & asylums, though Spitalfields was home to waves of immigrants & craftsmen. London`s trade brought docks & warehouses, but not much prosperity to the local residents. Though notorious for poverty, the East End was a starting point for many leaders of church & state & for future millionaires. Characters in this vivid story include Dr Barnardo, Ghandi, the Krays, Mosley & Captain Cook.
