Readers of the Telegraph Letters Page will be fondly aware of the eclectic combination of learned wisdom, wistful nostalgia & robust good sense that characterise its correspondence. But what of the 95 per cent of the paper`s huge postbag that never sees the light of day? Some of the best letters inevitably arrive too late for the 24/7 news cycle, or don`t quite fit with the rest of the day`s selection. Others are just a little too whimsical, or indeed too risque, to publish in a serious newspaper. & more than a few are completely & utterly (and wonderfully) mad. Thankfully Iain Hollingshead is on-hand to give the authors of the best unpublished letters the stage they so richly deserve. Baffled, furious, defiant, mischievous, they inveigh & speculate on every subject under the sun, from the rubbish on television these days to the venality of our MPs. The sixth book in the bestselling Unpublished Letters series, with an agenda as enticing as ever, As I Was Saying...will prove, once again, that the Telegraph`s readers have an astute sense of what really matters. ...

Nobleman, writer, adventurer & inspiration for the swashbuckling gun runner in the ” Adventures of Tintin”, Henri de Monfried lived by his own account `a rich, restless, magnificent life` as one of the great travellers of his or any age. Infamous as well as famous, his name is inextricably linked to the Red Sea & the raffish ports between Suez & Aden in the early years of the twentieth century. This is a compelling account of how de Monfried seeks his fortune by becoming a collector & merchant of the fabled Gulf pearls, then is drawn into the shadowy world of arms trading, slavery, smuggling & drugs. Hashish was the drug of choice, & de Monfried writes of sailing to Suez with illegal cargos, dodging blockades & pirates. ...

Has The West Lost It?: A Provocation

The West`s centuries-old status as the centre of global wealth and power is coming to an end. As the new powers - China and India from Asia and others from Africa and Latin America - rise to the top of the world`s pecking order, how should the West react? Kishore Mahbubani argues passionately and provocatively that the West can no longer impose its power and ideals on the world at large, and - paradoxically - that only by admitting its decline can the West set itself up for strategic success in the long term. Mahbubani examines the myths and self-delusions of Western power with an outsider`s critical eye, and the shocking freshness of his geopolitical analysis will give all Westerners and political thinkers pause for thought.
