Two brothers face cruelty, hardship, & hope, on the ultimate journey in search of freedom. Eleven-year-old Tenzin hasn`t seen his older brother, Pasang, in five years, so he is thrilled when Pasang unexpectedly returns to their Tibetan village late one night. Now eighteen, Pasang is an educated monk whose return from India provokes the suspicious & ever-watchful eyes of the Chinese authorities. Unbeknownst to Tenzin, Pasang has conspired with their mother to leave again
- taking his younger brother with him, this time, in search of a better life. At first Tenzin is thrilled to embark on such an adventure with Pasang. But crushing homesickness soon sets in as the brothers eke out a meagre existence begging in the unfamiliar streets of Lhasa, often narrowly dodging the police. They finally scrape together enough money to begin the most harrowing part of their journey: the physically excruciating, dangerous, & illegal trek to a new country on the other side of the Himalayan mountains, where they can be granted refugee status & begin to rebuild their lives. Along the way they suffer abuse at the hands of border police, meet fellow Tibetans from whom they draw strength, & have a chance encounter with a film crew that will change their lives. Based on the true story of the brothers` 1994 journey first made into an acclaimed documentary by Nick Gray, Escape from Tibet is a riveting tale of courage, adventure, & triumph. The outpouring of support for the boys that resulted after the documentary aired on ITV in 1997 led to the brothers moving to London, where they live today. Only now do they feel that the full story of their daring escape can be told. A foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama & an introduction provide historical context. Black & white photographs of Nick Gray`s travels through Tibet vividly evoke the boys` homel&, & a timeline, glossary, & maps further contextualize the Tibetans` controversial & ongoing struggle with China.

Leaving their Welsh hill farm behind, Nick, Ros & their children arrive on the little-known island of Ikaria in 1978, having impulsively boarded the first ferry leaving Athens. Escape to Ikaria tells the story of how they become involved with the islanders & their way of life. Nick tries his hand at anything to get by: night fishing out in the Aegean, unloading the potato boats from Samos, mixing cement for wayward house-builder Datsun Jim, & tending the gardens of the old monastery where a solitary nun, Sister Ulita, controls the village`s water supply. ...

Based on many interviews, & hundreds of reference photos, Kugler`s beautifully observed drawings of his interviewees bring to life their location
- a room, a camp, on the road: the stretch of tents on Kos, opposite the stalls selling trinkets to tourists. His reporting of their stories is peppered with snatches of conversation & images of the objects that have become such a significant part of their lives: a toilet roll, the rolling tobacco pouch, the mobile phone. Through Kugler`s complicated, intense graphic reportage, we empathise with those whose experiences he records.
