One spring, many years ago, Esther Woolfson`s daughter rescued a fledgling rook. That rook, named Chicken, quickly established herself as part of the family, & other birds, including an irascible cockatiel & a depressive parrot, soon followed. But it was the corvids
- members of the crow family
- who amazed Woolfson with their personality & their capacity for affection. This classic blend of memoir & natural history combines the author`s fascination with all things avian, from the mechanics of flight to the science of birdsong, with her funny, tender stories of life among the birds.

Cosenza Province in a series of handy size road maps from Litografia Artistica Cartografica (LAC) with more minor local roads & tracks than can be found on most regional maps. The series is gradually being changed to a new style of digitally derived cartography, so presentation of adjoining titles may vary. All the maps have hill shading to represent the general relief with spot heights for selected peaks, & show a few more local roads & rough tracks than the other road map series. Intermediate road distances are indicated. Regional, provincial & communal borders are marked, & railways, funiculars, airports, sea ferry links & campsites are shown. The legend is in Italian only. The new, digitally produced editions are indexed & have enhanced, more finely drawn cartography: the hill-shading is less bold, motorway service areas are marked, natural parks are highlighted & an expanded range of symbols indicates various landmarks & sites, e.g. antiquities, churches, etc. Two styles of the new cartography are produced, differing only in the colour of the predominant background shading: grey or yellow/green. Some of the new editions include geographical coordinates for the map corners. The index of localities is on the reverse. This title is still produced in the traditional cartographic style. ...

For decades, the story of the world`s first space-faring nation has been underplayed in the West. Now, for the first time, the remarkable account of Russia`s space programme will be brought to light. This book accompanies a landmark exhibition at the Science Museum, London, which represents a major collaboration with the Moscow State Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics & the Federal Space Agency, Roscosmos. Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see objects that have never before left Russia, including rockets that launched the space age, actual craft that carried humans into space, the spacesuits, equipment & personal mementos of those who flew, alongside stunning artworks that articulated Russia`s longing for space. But this is far more than simply a book of exceptional objects; it is also a book of incredible stories. These are the stories of the people who dreamt of early space exploration, those who made it happen, those who risked their lives to experience it & those who continue its legacy today. ...

The biggest & best ever reproduction of the Space Age`s most remarkable images. The magnificent vault of stars emblazoning Earth`s night skies are but an infinitesimal fraction of the hundreds of billions that inhabit our galaxy
- & there are at least as many galaxies in the universe as there are stars in the Milky Way. Cosmos makes sense of this dizzying celestial panorama by exploring it one step at a time, illustrating the planets, moons, stars, nebulae, white dwarfs, black holes & other exotica that populate the heavens with some of science`s most spectacular photographs. The book opens with an orbital survey of planet Earth, before venturing into the solar system heading for interstellar space & the heart of our galaxy. As the journey unfolds, the rhythms of stellar life emerge: we pass through dark clouds of dust & gas ablaze with newly smelted stars & we witness dying stars bloom & fade as planetary nebulae, or tear themselves apart as supernovae. Having crossed the Milky Way, we enter intergalactic space. Out here we watch the hidden lives of galaxies: we see them flock & cluster, forming massive conglomerations that span millions of light years, visibly warping space with their tremendous gravity. After covering an almost unimaginable 13.4 billion light years, we approach the edge of space & the dawn of time where our voyage must end, but not before we consider how the universe was born, & how it might die.A landmark in popular science publishing, Cosmos is a majestic, giant format, account of the ultimate journey
- a 13.7-billion-light-year- (or 130-billion-trillion kilometre-) voyage from our home planet to the edge of the universe & the beginning of time. Illustrated with 450 images of staggering beauty.
