` Nothing so fully displays the grandeur of his mind as his immense & rare collections.. .perhaps the fullest & most curious in the world`, National Gazette, 1753 Hans Sloane (1660-1753) was the greatest collector of his time, & one of the greatest of all time. His name is familiar today through the London streets & squares named after him on land he once owned (Sloane Square, Hans Place), but the man himself, & his achievements, are almost forgotten. Born in the north of Irel&, Sloane made his fortune as a physician to London`s wealthiest residents & through investment in land & slavery. He became one of the eighteenth century`s preeminent natural historians, ultimately succeeding his rival Isaac Newton as President of the Royal Society, & assembled an astonishing collection of specimens, artefacts & oddities
- the most famous curiosity cabinet of the age. Sloane`s dream of universal knowledge, of a gathering together of every kind of thing in the world, was enabled by Britain`s rise to global ascendancy. In 1687 he travelled to Jamaica, then at the heart of Britain`s commercial empire, to survey its natural history, & later organised a network of correspondents who sent him curiosities from across the world. Shortly after his death, Sloane`s vast collection was then acquired
- as he had hoped
- by the nation. It became the nucleus of the world`s first national public museum, the British Museum, which opened in 1759. This is the first biography of Sloane in over sixty years & the first based on his surviving collections. Early modern science & collecting are shown to be global endeavours intertwined with imperial enterprise & slavery but which nonetheless gave rise to one of the great public institutions of the Enlightenment, as the cabinet of curiosities gave way to the encyclopaedic museum. Collecting the World describes this pivotal moment in the emergence of modern knowledge, & brings this totemic figure back to life.

Map No. 148, Collegiate Peaks Wildernes, CO, in an extensive series of GPS compatible, contoured hiking maps of USA’s national & state parks or forests & other popular recreational areas. Cartography based on the national topographic survey, with additional tourist information. The maps, with most titles now printed on light, waterproof & tear-resistant plastic paper, highlight walking trails along with campsites & other accommodation, picnic sites, areas for various recreational pursuits such as horse riding or skiing, drinking water sources, & many other facilities of interest to the outdoor enthusiast. Cartography is based on information from the USGS (United States Geological Survey
- the country’s national survey organization), revised by the National Geographic Maps in cooperation with the National Park Service, USDA Forest Service, etc. Topography is excellently presented by contours (interval varies according to scale), enhanced by relief shading & colouring/graphics for wood cover, glaciers, etc. All heights are given in feet. The maps have a UTM grid plus latitude & longitude margin ticks & GPS waypoints for selected important locations. Each map is double-sided to give either maximum coverage of the chosen area or additional enlargements of its important sections. Accompanying notes provide useful information on relevant regulations, safety precautions, contact addresses, etc.* *IMPORTANT
- PLEASE NOTE: the series is very extensive, ranging in scale from 1:400, 000 for the vast national parks of Alaska to 1:25, 000 for local map in several states. We recommend, therefore, viewing the series by state rather than the whole list.*

The crash of the Indian plate into Asia is the biggest known collision in geological history, & it continues today. The result is the Himalaya & Karakoram
- one of the largest mountain ranges on Earth. The Karakoram has half of the world`s highest mountains & a reputation as being one of the most remote & savage ranges of all. In this beautifully illustrated book, Mike Searle, a geologist at the University of Oxford & one of the most experienced field geologists of our time, presents a rich account of the geological forces that were involved in creating these mountain ranges. Using his personal accounts of extreme mountaineering & research in the region, he pieces together the geological processes that formed such impressive peaks.
