Caermardi Comitatus In Quo Dimetae Olim Habituerunt, an original antique map by C. Saxton / W. Kip, published in London 1607-1637. A copperplate engraving, coloured. Map size 31.5 x 26.5 cm, overall mounted size 42.5 x 47.5 cm. The map is from a 1637 edition of Camden's Britannia. William Camden (1551-1623) was an English historian & antiquary who devoted himself to the study of the antiquities of Britain, travelling round the country visiting sites. The results of his work were brought together in the Britannia, published in 1586. However, one of the few criticisms levelled at this work was the absence of maps. This failing was remedied in the sixth edition of 1607 for which maps were commissioned from William Kip & William Hole. Drawing on the surveys of Saxton, Norden & the Anonymous/ William Smith series, they produced a series of 57 maps. The maps are clearly engraved, often with decorative cartouches; some have ships & sea monsters. These maps form an attractive & popular series. Antique maps from various original publishers are presented on the Stanford ...

Caermarthenshire, an original antique map by G. Cole / J. Roper, published in London, c. 1804 -1810. A copperplate engraving, original colour. Map size 23 x 17.5 cm with a mount size of 41 x 33 cm.A detailed nineteenth-century map of Carmarthen that was published in the atlas, The British Atlas; Comprising A Complete Set Of County Maps, Of England & Wales; & Plans Of Cities & Principal Towns in 1810. The map was drawn by G. Cole & engraved by John Roper for publication in The Beauties Of England & Wales, that was published in parts, from c.1804. Such was the success of the publication that the maps were re-used in other publications, as here. The maps show accurate geographical detail, including the turnpike, mail coach & principal roads, sites of Roman & other historical remains, as well as the seats of the nobility & the gentry, & market towns with their distances from London. The maps also show the division of the counties into hundreds or wapontakes. They are representative of the functional nineteenth-century approach to cartography, yet are not unattractive.
