Some sheets for popular areas like the National Parks are still branded as Outdoor Leisure (OL) maps, but are now included in this series as the cartography is the same as that in the Explorer Maps. The Explorer maps offer a substantial improvement on the Pathfinder series, with greater use of colour, larger area per map, & stronger emphasis on information for ramblers & tourists. The main map covers Bishop's Castle which, until 1966, could claim to be the smallest municipal borough in Engl&. Until 1832 it returned two Members to Parliament. Between 1865 & 1935 it was the terminus of an especially eccentric railway, linking it with the outside world at Craven Arms. The map covers most of the town, from Castlegreen & the site of the castle southward to St John the Baptist's church & the Old Hall, & beyond them into open country. Features include the workhouse, the terminus of the Bishop's Castle Railway, Church Street, High Street. This book contains over 200 old photographs portraying aspects of Bishopston, Horfield Down & St Andrews over the last century. These districts, so difficult to define both in geographical & historical terms, are brought together into a whole to make a fascinating & informative read for everyone who has at any time called them home. Through the second half of the nineteenth century & the first half of the twentieth century the area was extensively developed as the city of Bristol expanded into its rural surroundings. Farmland was rapidly transformed into a network of new streets & roads & the ancient village of Horfield was overwhelmed. In place of countryside new communities were established & it is their history that this book seeks to celebrate. The changing nature of street scenes is set alongside the shops that people frequented, the schools their children attend & the activities & institutions they supported
- notably the churches & the various sporting clubs. Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Bristol Rugby Football Club &, latterly, Bristol Rovers Football Club all based themselves in the area. The photographs have been selected from various sources including the extensive archive built up by Bishopston, Horfield & Ashley Down Local History Society whose members have compiled this timely volume.

The maps have contours at 5 metre intervals, plus relief shading & graphics for rocky outcrops & boulders. Further graphics and/or colouring show different types of land use or vegetation (forests, arable l&, orchards, marshes, peat bogs, etc). An unusual feature of this survey is the colouring indicating buildings below or above two storeys high & “leisure/holiday homes”.
