Born & bred in the North East of Engl&, David Moffatt had no intention of disturbing his deep roots in the banks of the Tyne until his University tutor asked him to go to Mato Grosso in Brazil. With a fraught love life, & his football team heading for relegation, suddenly a year in the jungle sounded like a good idea. His life is changed forever... Against a backdrop of growing up in postwar Tyneside, Without a Paddle describes David`s travels in a series of tales & delightful vignettes. Amusing, sometimes hilarious, occasionally sad, we meet his drunken bush guide that he has to disarm, his incompetent camp cook who nearly poisons his boss, an odd assortment of expeditionaries from the elderly entomologist that David has to save from the wasps to a sexchange capybara, & the young female zoologist who...well, it`s all in the book. With a major bid submission hours away, David gets locked stark naked in his bathroom in Cairo, exiting via the window to a busy street seems his only option. At the height of the `red terror` in post-revolutionary Ethiopia, his room is searched while he sleeps
- & was the hammering on his door in a seedy hotel in Ogaden the beginning of a kidnap? New Year`s Eve in Rio finds him in a club to which he doesn`t belong & discover what happens to the Gambian beauty queen in Banjul market. After growing up on Tyneside with a teddy bear that travelled to South Africa, playing & watching football & more football, singing with The Invaders & being suspended from school, none of this had equipped David with the paddle he needed to steer him through his travels. Without a Paddle is a light-hearted memoir that will appeal to those with an interest in foreign travel, or who simply enjoy a good laugh.

It is 2011, & all universities in North Korea have been shut down for an entire year, except for the all-male Pyongyang University of Science & Technology. This is where Suki Kim has accepted a job teaching English. Over the next six months she will eat three meals a day with her young charges & struggle to teach them to write, all under the watchful eye of the regime. Life at the university is lonely & claustrophobic. Her letters are read by censors & she must hide her notes & photographs not only from her minders but also from her colleagues, evangelical Christian missionaries, whose faith she does not share. As the weeks pass she discovers how easily her students lie, & how total is their obedience to Kim Jong-il. She also, bravely, hints at the existence of a world beyond their own: the internet, free travel, democracy, & other ideas forbidden in a country where torture & execution are commonplace. Yet her pupils are also full of boyish enthusiasm, with flashes of curiosity not yet extinguished. Without You, There Is No Us offers a moving & incalculably rare glimpse of life inside the world`s most inscrutable country. ...

[ Previously published as ` Went The Day Well`] ` Of all the books marking the bicentenary Waterloo, this has to be the best` Spectator `A book to die for` Evening Standard From Samuel Johnson Prize shortlisted author David Crane, this is a breathtaking portrait of the Britain that fought the battle of Waterloo. As Wellington`s rain-sodden army retreated towards an obscure valley called Waterloo, the men & women of Britain were still going to the theatre & science lectures, working in the fields & the factories, reading & writing books & sermons, painting their pictures & sitting in front of Lord Elgin`s marbles. David Crane`s stunning freeze-frame of Britain on this day of momentous change shifts hour by hour between Britain & Belgium. The Britain that fought Waterloo
- its radicals & patriots, artisans & aristocrats, prisoners & poets
- appears through the smoke of battle & the mythology of Waterloo in this magnificent & original tracing of the endless, overlapping connections between people`s lives.

The maps are taken from the British War Office 1:12, 500 plans & reduced at Approx. 1:19, 000. Published in 1945, prior to the Allied occupation of the area, the maps are especially good at showing industry, collieries & transport. They are not bombing maps

- but show the areas with all their industrial sites & railways largely as they were before the bombing raids of 1943-44. The maps have additional information added by British intelligence. This is normally accurate but allowance must be made for the `fog of war` & occasional spelling mistakes, etc. Each title has on the reverse a specially written introduction to the area in English, with a shorter text in German. Map legend is in English only.
