Cloth-backed reproduction from the Old Folding Maps of a political map of the world published by Edward Stanford in 1884 with Pacific Ocean at its centre. Country boundaries, drawn in different colours, present Europe & Africa very different from today, Asia with many changes mainly in the Middle East, but the Americas mostly unchanged. A particularly interesting feature of the map is the difference in the presentation of the two Polar Regions: the Arctic Ocean with most of its coastline already there, whilst the Antarctic is still in the early stages of exploration & only segments of its coast already mapped. London has been an irresistible subject for generations of artists, draughtsmen & photographers, who have captured scenes of everyday life as well as the grand occasions, depicting the formality & the commonplace. Their work has provided us with a rich legacy that is a record of London & its people, complementing the testimony of writers in portraying the humour & sometimes the folly within the metropolis. The range of illustrations

Includes::
the atmospheric paintings of Claude de Jongh from the early seventeenth century, the Georgian elegance shown on Canaletto`s cultured canvases, the satirical depictions of gin-soaked mothers by William Hogarth, & Gustav Dore`s disturbingly grim images of slums dwellers of Victorian London. The map-makers, too, captured the layout & character of the city. But there are other illustrations, by little-known draughtsmen, of particular corners or details of life within London`s many worlds. A Dutch visitor, Johannes de Witt, was at the Swan Theatre on Bankside in 1596 & sent a sketch of the interior to an acquaintance, whose copy is the only contemporary illustration of the interior of a playhouse of Shakespeare`s time. This spectacular collection of images from medieval times to the present

Includes::
paintings, sketches, prints & photographs, & is accompanied by authoritative explanatory accounts of the places, people & subjects illustrated. It reflects both the diversity & the changes in the city & underlines the significance of the pictorial record in understanding & appreciating London`s past.

Called ”the flour of Cities all, ” London has long been understood through the poetry it has inspired. Now poet Mark Ford has assembled the most capacious & wide-ranging anthology of poems about London to date, from Chaucer to Wordsworth to the present day, providing a chronological tour of urban life & of English literature. Nearly all of the major poets of British literature have left some poetic record of London: Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Donne, Milton, Dryden, Pope, Johnson, Wordsworth, Keats, Byron, & T. S. Eliot. Ford goes well beyond these figures, however, to gather significant verse of all kinds, from Jacobean city comedies to nursery rhymes, from topical satire to anonymous ballads. The result is a cultural history of the city in verse, one that represents all classes of London`s population over some seven centuries, mingling the high & low, the elegant & the salacious, the courtly & the street smart. Many of the poems respond to large events in the city`s history
- the beheading of Charles I, the Great Fire, the Blitz
- but the majority reflect the quieter routines & anxieties of everyday life through the centuries. Ford`s selections are arranged chronologically, thus preserving a sense of the strata of the capital`s history. An introductory essay by the poet explores in detail the cultural, political, & aesthetic significance of the verse inspired by this great city. The result is a volume as rich & vibrant & diverse as London itself.
