SHORTLISTED FOR THE LONGMAN-HISTORY TODAY PRIZE 2018LONGLISTED FOR THE ORWELL PRIZE 2018 ` Makes a gripping human story out of the wisest & most progressive policy achievement of any government in the history of the world.. . the welfare state deserves books this good` Stuart Maconie, New Statesman, Books of the Year`A brilliant book, full of little revelations` Jon Cruddas, Prospect` Carefully argued, deftly balanced & wittily written, with countless lovely details` Dominic Sandbrook, Sunday Times A landmark book from a remarkable new historian, on a subject that has never been more important
- or imperilled Today, everybody seems to agree that something has gone badly wrong with the British welfare state. In the midst of economic crisis, politicians & commentators talk about benefits as a lifestyle choice, & of `skivers` living off hard-working `strivers` as they debate what a welfare state fit for the twenty-first century might look like. This major new history tells the story of one the greatest transformations in British intellectual, social & political life: the creation of the welfare state, from the Victorian workhouse, where you had to be destitute to receive help, to a moment just after the Second World War, when government embraced responsibilities for people`s housing, education, health & family life, a commitment that was unimaginable just a century earlier. Though these changes were driven by developments in different & sometimes unexpected currents in British life, they were linked by one over-arching idea: that through rational & purposeful intervention, government can remake society. It was an idea that, during the early twentieth century, came to inspire people across the political spectrum. In exploring this extraordinary transformation, Bread for All explores & challenges our assumptions about what the welfare state was originally for, & the kinds of people who were involved in creating it. In doing so, it asks what the idea continues to mean for us today.

No sport demands & celebrates the suffering of its participants like road racing, yet the pursuit of cycling was formed out of a spirit of emancipation, freedom, invention & revolution. It started with Victorian adventurers who took their new machine across continents, up unscaled peaks & into the first races, followed by those who saw the potential of the bicycle as a radical mode of transport, before the twentieth-century sun shone on a golden age of cycling, bringing fame & fortune to its glamorous new sporting superstars. Through fifty key riders, from early pioneers like Mark Twain to modern superstars like Eddy Merckx, Break Away is a fascinating & arresting new history of road cycling. ...

Paralysis. Stuttering. The `shakes`. Inability to stand or walk. Temporary blindness or deafness. When strange symptoms like these began appearing in men at Casualty Clearing Stations in 1915, a debate began in army & medical circles as to what it was, what had caused it & what could be done to cure it. But the numbers were never large. Then in July 1916 with the start of the Somme battle the incidence of shell shock rocketed. The high command of the British army began to panic. An increasingly large number of men seemed to have simply lost the will to fight. As entire battalions had to be withdrawn from the front, commanders & military doctors desperately tried to come up with explanations as to what was going wrong. ` Shell shock`
- what we would now refer to as battle trauma
- was sweeping the Western Front. By the beginning of August 1916, nearly 200, 000 British soldiers had been killed or wounded during the first month of fighting along the Somme. Another 300, 000 would be lost before the battle was over. But the army always said it could not calculate the exact number of those suffering from shell shock. Re-assessing the official casualty figures, Taylor Downing for the first time comes up with an accurate estimate of the total numbers who were taken out of action by psychological wounds. It is a shocking figure. Taylor Downing`s revelatory new book follows units & individuals from signing up to the Pals Battalions of 1914, through to the horrors of their experiences on the Somme which led to the shell shock that, unrelated to weakness or cowardice, left the men unable to continue fighting. He shines a light on the official
- & brutal
- response to the epidemic, even against those officers & doctors who looked on it sympathetically. It was, they believed, a form of hysteria. It was contagious. & it had to be stopped. Breakdown brings an entirely new perspective to bear on one of the iconic battles of the First World War.

Bread And Oil

Coarse bread rubbed with tomato or garlic and then bathed in olive oil, is common to all the Mediterranean cultures. On the island of Majorca, it is known as pa amb oli, bread and oil. In Bread & Oil Tomas Graves celebrates the Majorcan character as reflected in its eating habits. He makes the sights, sounds, scents and people of the Spanish island spring to life so brilliantly in this creative triumph. part cookbook, the reader is charmed throughout. Recipes reflect the indigenous ingredients; wrinkled olives made with olive oil, lemon juice and crushed garlic; fried sardines topped with sauteed onions and marinated in vinegar served cold with bread and oil, and guacamole with tomatoes and onions.Originally published as Volem pa amb oli in the native Catalan language of the Balearics, this new revised and updated English-language edition of Graves` book offers an informative guide not only to an overlooked culinary tradition, but also to the immense cultural transition that`s changing the face of Europe.
