Australia`s Great Desert Tracks Atlas & Guide, an A4 spiral-bound road atlas based on the Hema`s highly acclaimed series of maps covering the Outback, with descriptions of 25 4WD treks across Australia’s deserts, safety tips & advice, an illustrated fauna & flora guide, etc. The opening section contains a general introduction, illustrated with colour photos, on the history & climate of this unique region, plus advice on preparation for the journey & safety tips for driving across such a demanding terrain. The following 100+ pages provide more specific information about Top 25 specially selected tracks, each presented on the necessary map extracts with a description of the routes & its places of interest, & details of facilities such as camping & other accommodation, fuel supplies & vehicle repair, drinking water, medical help, etc. The atlas also has an 8-page section with photos & brief notes on over 100 examples of local fauna & flora. Hema’s mapping in the atlas section shows roads & 4WD tracks, as well as very rough tracks which often become overgrown & may be difficult to follow. This information is divided into two groups: roads & tracks which were plotted during the fieldwork carried out by Hema, plus other tracks shown on the GA’s 1:250, 000 topographic survey maps & on other sources but not specifically verified by the publishers. The maps also show railways with stations & man-made features important for orienteering: disused railways, vermin proof fences, towers, gates, cattle grids, wells & waterholes, etc. Altitude colouring with relief shading & graphics indicates the terrain; national/state parks & reserves, aboriginal lands & restricted entry areas all indicated by colours. Permanent & mainly dry or salt lakes, sand ridges & cliffs are marked. The maps have a grid at intervals of 30’ with additional 5’ ticks along the grid lines. Where helpful, GPS coordinates are given for important junctions, isolated accommodation facilities, etc. A wide range of symbols indicate tourist information: various types of accommodation, stores, drinking water, medical facilities, petrol stations indicating types of fuel sold there, mechanical & tyre repairs facilities, etc. The maps, which are also annotated with interesting historical notes, provide an outstanding example of skilfully presented, informative cartography at its very best!PLEASE NOTE: Hema’s Great Desert Tracks mapping is also available as four separate maps – please enter “SI00000518” in the search box to see the list of currently available titles. ...
