For many years Andrew Greig saw the poet Norman Mac Caig as a father figure. Months before his death, Mac Caig`s enigmatic final request to Greig was that he fish for him at the Loch of the Green Corrie; the location, even the real name of his destination was more mysterious still. His search took in days of outdoor living, meetings, & fishing with friends in the remote hill lochs of far North-West Scotl&. It led, finally, to the waters of the Green Corrie, which would come to reflect Greig`s own life, his thoughts on poetry, geology & land ownership in the Highlands & the ambiguous roles of whisky, love & male friendship. At the Loch of the Green Corrie is a richly atmospheric narrative, a celebration of losing & recovering oneself in a unique landscape, the consideration of a particular culture, & a homage to a remarkable poet & his world. ...

” The tale of Carl Wake & the hurricane that was waiting for him goes straight to the heart of the greatest sea stories: they are not about man against the sea, but man against himself. John Kretschmer`s book is as perfectly shaped & flawlessly written as such a story can be. In addition to being the best depiction I have ever read of what it is like to be inside a hurricane at sea, At the Mercy of the Sea is as moving a story of a man`s failure & redemption as can be found anywhere in the literature of the sea. This book is surely destined to become a classic.”--Peter Nichols, author of Sea Change & A Voyage for Madmen ” John Kretschmer has transformed this story of three men on a collision course with a hurricane into a modern seafaring classic.”--Peter Nielsen, editor of SAIL magazine ” With expert analysis & taut writing, he draws readers into that mad storm. You can`t turn away. You keep reading until it breaks your heart.”--Fred Grimm, columnist for the Miami Herald ” Once begun, his vivid & powerful narrative is impossible to put down.”--Derek Lundy, author of Godforsaken Sea & The Way of a Ship ”I felt I knew Carl Wake, because John Kretschmer found in him an archetype--an aging sailor with an age-old dream.”--Jim Carrier, transatlantic sailor & author of The Ship & the Storm: Hurricane Mitch & the Loss of the Fantome ”A remarkable book, impossible to put down.”--Herb Mc Cormick, sailing journalist ...

First published to great acclaim in 1979, At the Pillars of Hercules (a title taken from a certain Soho pub) confirmed Clive James`s place as a writer of immense talent. This new paperback edition is as entertaining & elegant as ever. His main topics are contemporary poetry, aesthetics & the theory & practice of criticism, the popular novel, & the literature of modern history & politics. His discussions range from the legacy of Auden & Larkin to Gore Vidal & Lord Longford. His inimitable wit & candour are ever present. ` The opportunity offered me by the London literary editors
- overqualified, confident, & mischievous to a man, especially the women
- was too good to miss. Anything I felt like throwing into the review, they would print. Over the top was exactly the way they wanted me to go. As long as they understood it themselves, no reference could be too obscure or allusion too fleeting. In those days the reader, if he encountered something on the page that he could not immediately underst&, was still trusted to renew his subscription.. . All you have to remember is that you`re not the whole show.I sometimes still had trouble remembering that, but I like to think, looking back, that solipsism made my admiration for others seem the more selfless
- with the concomitant benefit that I could do a better hatchet job without being thought of as having laid claim to a monopoly of objective truth` Clive James, from the new introduction

When Mustafa Kemal Ataturk became the first president of Turkey in 1923, he set about transforming his country into a secular republic where nationalism sanctified by science--and by the personality cult Ataturk created around himself--would reign supreme as the new religion. This book provides the first in-depth look at the intellectual life of the Turkish Republic`s founder. In doing so, it frames him within the historical context of the turbulent age in which he lived, & explores the uneasy transition from the late Ottoman imperial order to the modern Turkish state through his life & ideas. Shedding light on one of the most complex & enigmatic statesmen of the modern era, M. Sukru Hanioglu takes readers from Ataturk`s youth as a Muslim boy in the volatile ethnic cauldron of Macedonia, to his education in nonreligious & military schools, to his embrace of Turkish nationalism & the modernizing Young Turks movement. Who was this figure who sought glory as an ambitious young officer in World War I, defied the victorious Allies intent on partitioning the Turkish heartl&, & defeated the last sultan? Hanioglu charts Ataturk`s intellectual & ideological development at every stage of his life, demonstrating how he was profoundly influenced by the new ideas that were circulating in the sprawling Ottoman realm. He shows how Ataturk drew on a unique mix of scientism, materialism, social Darwinism, positivism, & other theories to fashion a grand utopian framework on which to build his new nation. Now with a new preface, this book provides the first in-depth look at the intellectual life of the Turkish Republic`s founder. ...
