Asia in 1884 on a cloth-backed reproduction (small size) of a map drawn by J. Arrowsmith & published by Edward Stanford. Country boundaries are outlined in bright colours while the pale background with subtle hachure to show the mountain ranges makes the numerous place names easy to read. Many smaller tributaries of the continent’s great rivers are named, from the Ob, the Yenisei & the Lena in the north to the Ganges or the Irrawaddy in the south & the Yangtze in the east. Coverage extends to the Equator, so the southern part of Indonesia is not included. While the north of the continent looks as it was 100 years later except for the changes in the European part of Russia, Central Asia & the Middle East are much different from now, Mongolia is still part of China, etc. Names of Chinese ports open to foreign commerce after the Second Opium War are underlined; “ Hong-kong I. & Victoria” are duly annotated with Cy for colony. Latitude & longitude lines are drawn at 5° intervals. Each individual cloth-backed map is sold folded in a colourful case covered with a unique design marbled paper – no two cases are identical.PLEASE NOTE: this title is also available as a wall map in two different sizes in the “ Stanfords Classics Collection of Historical Maps”. Asian Absences is the contemplative & lyrical narrative of a traveller whose sensory & spiritual journey takes him from Copenhagen to Eastern Asia. En route, he passes through a feverish India & an abandoned hospital for lepers, undertakes a hallucinogenic mountain pilgrimage with shamans in Kathmandu, embarks on an industrial oil tanker to Singapore, & examines the beautifully odd A” curiosities of Tokyo`s metropolis, before arriving at his final destination, the elusive Tibetan city of Shangri-La. Wolfgang Buscher vividly captures the conflicting emotional & intellectual responses of a stranger in distant lands, evoking both the exotic wonder & threatening otherness of unfamiliar cultures that repeatedly challenge mythic assumptions about the East. ...

In 2011, adhering to his mentor Henri Cartier-Bresson`s mantra to `photograph the truth`, animation filmmaker Ishu Patel embarks on a photographic journey in southeast Asia. Abandoning moving images to secure a series of still images that capture a uniquely human gesture or powerful thought-provoking story, he prowls both urban & rural areas armed only with a Leica M9 with 35 & 50mm fast lenses. The result is a collection of elusive still images
- photographs, mainly in black & white, that tell a story, seize a moment in life or are a witness to joy, struggle or human dignity. Never political or judgmental, the collection comprises Patel`s homage to the unsung lives of ordinary Asians, many of whom are increasingly overlooked in today`s fast- changing world. Patel also contributes thoughtful essays on the various countries & peoples he has so powerfully photographed.
