In 2011, adhering to his mentor Henri Cartier-Bresson`s mantra to `photograph the truth`, animation filmmaker Ishu Patel embarks on a photographic journey in southeast Asia. Abandoning moving images to secure a series of still images that capture a uniquely human gesture or powerful thought-provoking story, he prowls both urban & rural areas armed only with a Leica M9 with 35 & 50mm fast lenses. The result is a collection of elusive still images
- photographs, mainly in black & white, that tell a story, seize a moment in life or are a witness to joy, struggle or human dignity. Never political or judgmental, the collection comprises Patel`s homage to the unsung lives of ordinary Asians, many of whom are increasingly overlooked in today`s fast- changing world. Patel also contributes thoughtful essays on the various countries & peoples he has so powerfully photographed.

Few territories are as hotly contested as the western Pacific Ocean. Across the 1.5 million square mile expanse of the East & South China Sea, six countries lay overlapping claims that date back centuries. China, Vietnam, Korea & Indonesia assert their right to trade routes, deploying military garrisons to defend disputed territories while Japan, Vietnam & the Philippines resist their expansion. But no single government can face a superpower such as China alone, & as the country extends its reach, less powerful states look to the US for diplomatic mediation creating an American security umbrella that stretches across the Asia-Pacific nicknamed the ” American Lake”. These conditions produce an unstable cocktail of competing interests & international tensions poised for conflict. BBC foreign correspondent Humphrey Hawksley has been following this increasingly precarious situation in East Asia for decades. Reporting on years of political developments, he has witnessed China`s rise to become one of the world`s most powerful trade entities, elbowing smaller markets out in the process. In Asian Waters, Hawksley draws on his experience as a veteran journalist to portray the region in all its complexity & delivers a compelling account of where it is heading. Will China continue to rise to power peacefully or will its ambition prompt a new world war? Will Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, & Taiwan create a multi-lateral alliance similar to NATO to pre-empt further encroachment? Asian Waters delves into these topics & more as Hawksley presents the most comprehensive analysis of the region to date. ...

The dramatic story of the relationship between the world`s three largest economies, one that is shaping the future of us all, by one of the foremost experts on east Asia For more than half a century, American power in the Pacific has successfully kept the peace. But it has also cemented the tensions in the toxic rivalry between China & Japan, consumed with endless history wars & entrenched political dynasties. Now, the combination of these forces with Donald Trump`s unpredictable impulses & disdain for America`s old alliances threatens to upend the region, & accelerate the unravelling of the postwar order. If the United States helped lay the postwar foundations for modern Asia, now the anchor of the global economy, Asia`s Reckoning will reveal how that structure is now crumbling. With unrivalled access to archives in the US & Asia, as well as many of the major players in all three countries, Richard Mc Gregor has written a tale which blends the tectonic shifts in diplomacy with the domestic political trends & personalities driving them. It is a story not only of an overstretched America, but also of the rise & fall & rise of the great powers of Asia. The confrontational course on which China & Japan have increasingly set themselves is no simple spat between neighbors. & the fallout would be a political & economic tsunami, affecting manufacturing centers, trade routes, & political capitals on every continent. ...
