If you want to take flower painting seriously, this is one of the best introductions you could wish for. The book begins with an extensive introduction to botanical painting, including the materials you will need & how to choose your subject as well as composition, drawing & the use of colour. This & the Six Stages of Painting that follow are far more than the usual preliminary remarks & are, in fact, some of the main meat of the book. By doing things this way, Michael only has to give you one set of demonstrations instead of 26, leaving the rest of the book free to concentrate on information specific to each plant rather than endless repetition. Each species is thus dealt with in two double-page spreads. The first will show you details of the flowers, leaves & stems & also a drawing of the whole plant. The second spread contains the painting instructions & the finished work side by side. This unusual approach works well in conjunction with the introductory sections & means that you are presented with all the information you need both efficiently & concisely. Many books on botanical illustration (the rather scientific art of flower painting) can bog you down in detail, but Michael Lakin has found a neat & innovative way round this that will make learning a pleasure. If you want to take flower painting seriously, this is one of the best introductions you could wish for setting you on your way to learn some of the more advanced skills in botanical painting. Michael's first demonstration goes though how to paint a Nymphaea (Water Lilly) progressing onto a Galanthus (Snowdrop), using his simple step-by-step six stage technique. Starting with the first thin wash, he gradually grades the colour & then builds up tone & form with stronger colours to create a three dimensional effect. He uses darker tones to give shadows to the parts of the flower that crossover, & then harmonises the colours of the flower & leaves to catch the reflected light. Then he adds detail & tidies up uneven edges using a flat brush, & brings the whole subject together with a final thin wash using transparent colours to catch the light. There's also an extra feature where Michael Lakin demonstrates how to add depth & detail on tubular flowers.
