- for use in the classroom or home. The Butterfly Garden kit contains: Certificate for five live Painted Lady caterpillars (no live specimens are in the kit). Reusable Habitat Net (30 cubic cm). Feeding kit & full instructions. So how does the Butterfly Garden work? 1) Open the kit to find the certificate for the live caterpillars. Send this off & you will then receive your caterpillars in the post. Alternatively you can collect your own from your garden. 2) When the caterpillars arrive, put them in the net & watch them grow. 3) When the caterpillars have changed into chrysalides, they open the cup & place the white paper disc inside their hatching habitat. 4) Once the butterflies hatch, fresh flowers (not included) can be placed in the hatching habitat. Then, release the butterflies into nature. When your butterflies emerge, set them free! The life cycle of our caterpillars takes Approx. three to five weeks to develop.
